Help - can a spider get out of a high-sided bath?

Last night, I got up to use the loo and saw an ENORMOUS spider in the bath. The type that have a huge body and thick legs that wave at you.

I’m not a fan but thought I’d deal with the horror in the morning and went back to bed.

This morning, it’s not there! I thought it would reappear in the day but it’s now the evening and it has not reappeared. Can spiders escape a high-sided bath?? There’s no plug chain to climb up. Can they go back down the plug hole? I’ve never known that.

Where can it be???

Often they can get in but not out as the steep, slippery sides mean they can’t get enough grip to climb out. They can get trapped in vases and jugs on shelves the same way. Like a pp I leave a loo roll “ladder” and the spider can then climb out. Or I get DH who will happily pick up huge spiders.

I like you , to be scared of spiders but still be able to help them to safely is something you should be proud of.

If they're stuck in the bath, a towel draped down the side will help them climb

We currently have a spider hiding in the sink overflow. He’s a sneaky little bugger, he sits in there with two legs sticking out. Every time I try to grab a leg he scuttles further back in.
Could yours be in there?

Oh don’t. You’ll have all the darked on washing posters telling you it rubs its willy on the towel on the way out.

Reads a few posts while holding breathe as worried about photos. Then sensibly hides thread.

Just put a towel or bath mat over the side so the spider has something to climb. Then he’ll be on his way.

It could be in the plug-hole or the overflow - although the overflow thingy is quite high up the cliff of bath.

I’m not leaving a towel ladder for a now-hiding spider….

It's gone to rub its bum over your washing.

That is unbelievably unkind. I hope one of them lays eggs in your vacuum and hundreds of babies come running out.

Once I was living in a flat and there was one behind my chest of drawers whilst I was in bed. It ran away and we lost it. Next morning I put my Toms on- no socks! Felt a crunchy sensation. Spider was in my shoe. I went mental and killed it. I was terrified but felt so guilty and realised it wasn’t quite right. The thing must have been scared to death! Think how big we are to them

The only way I can imagine a spider climbing the sides of your bath is if there's a massive tide mark making the sides rough. It is probably lurking down the plughole but above the U bend water level. Just run the cold tap for a minute.

We have a 'spider catching kit' which consists of a transparent takeaway container and an old birthday card to slide under it. Then the spider is emptied out of the window.

You need the spider vacuum on Amazon. None of the other devices on here are any good.Very gentle and you let them run away outside without having to get anywhere near them

OP , you know when you see spiders crawling all over the walls ? Well, they're just practising for when they want to play in a bath .

Not wanting to terrify you further but the over flow on my old bath was plug shaped. I was enjoying a leisurely bath one evening and the most enormous spider appeared out of the overflow. It was like a tsunami getting out of the bath so fast!

Jump scare season is here. I know when my time ion earth is up I will be finished off with spider induced heart failure.
I know it’s irrational.

I noticed one in our bath when I was on the toilet at 3am. It isn’t there now.

Pretty sure I gassed it, as I couldn’t wait to get out of there either.

They don’t mean to get into the bath. They stick a web thread on the ceiling and parachute down all over our houses, they then scuttle away. But if they happen to land in the bath it takes them a while to get out so that why we see them.

Have you seen the speed they shoot down a web? They are like a bungee jumper on acid.

Me and my OH were in the lounge watching a spider spin a web doing this. We must have wasted an hour just watching it.

My cat always left the legs behind and only ate the squidgy bit.

Not to worry anyone, but a few years ago i was bitten by a false widow. My foot looked…unpleasant.

Why do people think we keep finding spiders in the bath?

Because for the most part, they can't climb out, unless the bath has reached student levels of grottieness and is so filthy it can get a grip on the side.

I am not a fan of spiders but don't kill them or leave them to trash about pointlessly until they die, if you can't pick it up, put a towel over the side and it will climb out.

Mine did that!! I picked up a little pile of legs once wondering what they were 🤢
