Does anyone have experiences that have made them believe in life after death?

My DH died in April. He had bowel cancer and was only 46 years old and not ready to die. I made the mistake today of picking up the photo album I made full of photos of him and I am having a really tough morning, my heart is absolutely broken. The only thing that gets me through the days is talking aloud to him and hoping that he is somewhere 'else' and can hear me or see me, but then I have moments where I think I am kidding myself and I am just a sad, grieving woman talking to thin air. I don't know what to believe, I hover between the two. But today I absolutely cannot and do not want to believe that there is nothing after death, I can't cope with the thought that he exists nowhere at all anywhere. He was so strong and had so much personality, it makes no sense. Does anybody have any personal experiences or know of any true stories that have led them to believe there is 'something' after we die? I would find it really comforting to hear from people that believe and have a reason why they believe. To those who believe we are just dust after death, you may be right, but today I can't hear that, and I don't need to be told that as I already know that is possible - which is why I haven't posted this in AIBU as I know the first 30 replies would be people rushing to tell me I'm deluding myself by hoping there is something more than darkness after we die. If anybody has anything to share that would bring some comfort today I am very ready to listen x

I am so sorry for your loss and the pain your feeling ❤️
I didn't believe in anything like it but I booked a medium as a bit of fun for a girly evening, we didn't even know what she'd be doing when she arrived, she came from ages away (like several motorway junctions) and we gave her one of the other girls names to the house she came to.
I've seen several other mediums since who aren't the real deal but she definitely was and when your ready OP it can actually be a comforting way to speak to your DH. But it's not something you have to do, it can be upsetting and hard to process afterwards and its recommended you wait 12 months for them to fully pass over.
I quite often talk aloud to both my closest lost relatives, I've heard from them both over the years and I genuinely feel they are there.

I’m losing the person closest to me to cancer. I have to believe that they will still be with me after death. It’s a depth of grief I never knew existed. I wouldn’t presume to know what you are going through @Magicpaintbrushbut like others I have a pretty good idea Flowers

Sorry for your loss we lost my cousin in December the day before her 46th birthday to cancer , in the days leading up to her death ( she was still coherent she went downhill in a matter of minutes) she would see a man in the corner of the room and a little girl sitting on the chair . I myself see spirits something wakes me and they are in my room i used to freak out now I'm used to it so I definitely believe there is something beyond death what that is though I couldn't say .

I did have a premonition my DH would die. I don't know if it's just coincidence or if it means something more, but about 18 months before he was diagnosed with cancer I spoke to both my mum and my nan separately and told them I had a horrible feeling he was going to get cancer, and he did. In fact when I spoke to them about it it's very likely he already had it but we didn't know because he had no symptoms at that point. By the time he started getting symptoms it had spread from his bowel to his lungs and liver, but there was no sign of anything until then. So I had that feeling, prior to it happening, but I didn't know it would be bowel, that shocked me. I also, for about ten years prior to that, would wake in the night with terrors that he would die - only about him, not about anyone else. Just this dread and fear, like my subconscious knew that something awful was coming and I couldn't stop it. Does it mean something that I had these premonitions, or was it just fear talking? I don't know. I read about 'soul contracts' - it's a thing where they say that prior to being born you agree to experience a particular and challenging life experience in order to grow and learn, even if it is terrible and hard, your soul develops and learns as a result of it. It might be nonsense, but I did wonder about it, because of the premonition, like I was expecting something terrible to happen and it did.

He was amazing. So funny, so charismatic, brave, my best friend. I don't care if it's outing; he was a police inspector and I was so proud of him. He did so much good, he was so capable and confident. He was my best friend. He was the best company in the world. He made me laugh more than anyone in the world. He was a brilliant dad to our DD. He felt things very deeply, we never ran out of things to talk about. He fought the cancer until the last ten minutes. Even on the day he died he kept trying to get out of bed, he was trying to talk to us. He fought it with everything he had. He was so strong. He was incredible. I will be so proud of him for the rest of my life.

Your words about your husband are just about one of the most beautiful things I have ever read. They have absolutely moved me to tears and I can’t tell you how very sorry I am that you have lost such a wonderful person ❤️

So sorry for your loss.
I have had signs that I feel come from
my parents. After my dad died I kept finding white feathers and both me and my daughter have smelt my mum’s perfume.

my parents. After my dad died I kept finding white feathers and both me and my daughter have smelt my mum’s perfume.

I kept finding white feathers in my garden also had a few white butterflies sometimes almost like they are following me! All of those can be signs. I feel sometimes if we are open to receiving signs, we will.

My Nan died when I was 7. She only had two grandchildren, me and my sister, and she doted on us both, I was the youngest by 11 years and my biggest memory of her is sitting on her lap while she squeezed me tight and she always said “ Oooh I could eat you!”

It isn’t something I’d ever told anyone, it had never crossed my mind to do so.

A friend arranged a medium night at her house and I only really went along to make up numbers but the first thing the medium said to me was that she had a lady with her and then said “it’s your Nan and she says that she could still eat you”.

Muchmore · 16/08/2026 22:12

Look at psychic_mediumdean on Instagram. I haven't seen him (I'm desperate to). His videos make me believe.

I'm so sorry for your loss. My dad died at 49 and one day I drove to visit his grave and it was raining very hard. I felt so lost and miserable I just sat in my car and cried without wanting to get out, and then suddenly the rain stopped and a massive rainbow appeared across the grey sky. It felt like a sign, and was also so ridiculously on cue that I had to just laugh and say 'Thanks, dad!'. Little things happen that can't be explained that give you comfort - robins fly up and sit near you and white feathers suddenly float down in front of you. Don't give up hope - we are all part of everything xx

CheesusWept · 16/08/2026 22:59

I have always believed that after death there is nothing. I even found that thought comforting.

My dad is 70 - a very gruff, sweary, tough Glaswegian. He made our childhood difficult because of what a tough bastard he was.
He’s not spiritual in the least (apart from alcohol…)

However, a few months ago, he told me that he’s seen ghosts.
He said he was 19 when he first saw one, and that it was his dead granny standing in his bedroom.
He said he saw his own mum and dad after they died - he was tearful recounting this one.
He said his dad said to him “Charlie, your mum’s here too.” He was choked up telling me this.

He also said he’d seen a man standing in what looked like a workman’s uniform in the corner of his bedroom - he didn’t recognise this man, and another time a toddler wearing an all in one romper. No idea who the toddler was. He said they didn’t ‘vanish’ all at once, it was like they were disappearing bit by bit until they were gone.

No cognitive issue, no substances at play, no illnesses at the time - something he’s seen for 50 years.

He was being completely honest, and I wouldn’t have believed a word of it if it was anyone else telling me. Now I’m rethinking all that I thought that I knew/believed about life after death.

We lost my brother 3 years ago, and my dad’s the only one who’s had one of those really vivid dreams, where my brother, who had been plagued by a leg injury and had a metal cage around his leg, was walking without the cage, smiling at him, and waving as he walked away.
Although my dad saw that in a dream, I’ve taken some comfort in that (since hearing about him seeing spirits) that it was a sign from my brother that he’s OK.

I’m so sorry for your loss.

Pussygaloregalapagos · 16/08/2026 23:23

I smell the cigarettes my mum used to smoke sometimes just at home when no one else there. And her perfume. She is following me around…. Gets stronger when I have let my nails go… she took her personal grooming very seriously so it always nudges me to get them re done. She painted hers in bed every Sunday night.

Gottostick · 16/08/2026 23:25

I’m so sorry for the loss of your husband. 46 is desperately young. I lost one of my brothers at 42 and another at 48, both very suddenly from massive heart attacks, so although everybody’s grief is different, I understand something of that feeling of trying to comprehend how someone who was so alive can suddenly just not physically be here anymore.

I’m also an evidential medium. I don’t tend to announce that on forums because I know people have very different views about mediumship, which I completely respect, but you specifically asked to hear from people whose experiences have made them believe there is something after death.
For me, it’s the evidence that has changed what I believe. I’ve received very specific information about people who have died. Their personalities, relationships, memories and little details that mean something to the person I’m reading for, things that I simply couldn’t have known beforehand. I’ve experienced it enough now that I personally don’t believe our consciousness simply disappears when our physical body dies.

The way I understand it is that we are more than our physical bodies. We are consciousness, or a soul, having a human experience. Death is the end of that physical experience rather than the end of us. I believe we return to something much bigger than we can fully understand from here and that we can look back on the life we have lived from a completely different perspective.

I also don’t believe we lose who we are. That’s actually one of the things I find most compelling about evidential mediumship. People come through with their personalities, humour, relationships, memories and recognisable characteristics. They are still them. To me it feels much less like someone has ceased to exist and more as though they have moved somewhere we simply cannot physically see them.

I believe our relationships continue too. Of course the physical relationship changes, and that absence can be excruciating because we want them here with us. But I don’t believe that love or connection disappears with the body.

So please keep talking to your husband if that feels right to you. Tell him you miss him. Tell him about your day. Tell him when you’re angry that he isn’t here. I still talk to my brothers. I certainly don’t believe you are talking to nothing.

I can’t prove exactly what happens when we die and I don’t think any of us can completely understand it while we’re here. But between losing my own brothers and what I have subsequently experienced through evidential mediumship, I absolutely believe there is more than this physical life and that the people we love continue.

I hope that brings you even a tiny bit of comfort today. x

So sorry for your loss @Magicpaintbrush and other posters too.

myDad had several heart attacks around 25 years ago and had emergency heart surgery.
he ‘died’ (flatlined?) in the theatre.

he said he saw the tunnel of light then saw a sort of sky filled with pink sort of clouds. He said he know that beyond the clouds he could see anyone he had lost, and do anything he wanted - he gave the example that he could have played a piano like Mozart- anything.

he then came back to his body because they were shocking his heart and it restarted.
he says he doesn’t worry about dying now because of his experience.

That's so weird because I had a dream where I was asked by a relative to 'find' her very young son who had decently passed away because theyd had no signs or feeling since he had gone and i remember telling them that he was angry and he said he didnt want to be found and he wasnt 'here' - wherever that was- but the sky was full of orangy pink clouds.

I also had a dream I was in a bungalow i didnt recognise, full of people mingling and talking i didnt recognise but i found my great gran and we sat at a dark wood old style table just talking and she said ' so you're a mum now then'. I think about her often and it was nice

Carpedimum · 16/08/2026 23:56

My DM is not what you would call woowoo at all, but she occasionally casually mentions that she can see dead people, especially near to people who are dying. She has described dead people in great detail that she never met, nor saw photos of. She says they come to fetch their loved ones. She says hospitals are ‘noisy’ with it.

I had an experience as a nurse. I was a student nurse in the late 80s. I was working one Christmas Day and it was an awful shift. Three different men had cardiac arrests. Two at the same time. The second man who arrested I noticed as I was running for equipment for the first patient. So I called for assistance and started moving all the furniture away and pulling the bed out and forward, pulling out pillows to get him flat. I then saw he was wearing dentures so I removed them and reached way back to his locker draw right at the back away from the bed and stuffed them in quickly so they wouldn’t get broken or lost. I remember having that thought. We started cardiac compressions and then the crash team arrived and after a short time we managed to resuscitate him. So then he’s coming around and after he’s stable everyone else has gone it’s just me and him and I’m helping to sit him up, put him back together so to speak. I say ‘right dentures’. I can’t think where they are, it’s been hectic and I couldn’t remember. He says to me’ I saw where you put them, I was watching from above the bed, you put them in the drawer right at the back there because you thought they might break if they fell off the locker’. I was stunned. I didn’t know what to say. I was 22 years old. I think I was just perplexed and regret not asking him more about it. There’s no way that man at that stage would have known where I had put those dentures unless he was above the scene is all I can say. Make of it what you will. I’m not religious.

How lovely & respectful everyone's been!
No-one saying 'load of rubbish' - bless you all!

My DH died aged 48 (heart.)
I've had SO many happenings. It would have been our Silver Wedding today. I hope he's nearby!

PestoPastaLife · 17/08/2026 00:06

I’m so sorry about your husband, he sounds wonderful.

Not quite the same, but I know a child whose identical twin died in utero - the living child has deliberately never been told but has made comments over the years which make it seem like she knows (I personally think she should be told but obviously not my business). But it does make me think there is more to life and death than biochemistry.

I always try to look at every lifespan as a gift. It helps me be grateful for the time we get with people and the life they had, even though it’s less than we wanted. With that said, I’m always worried my DH is going to die suddenly, makes me cry just thinking about it.

Miaminmoo · 17/08/2026 00:39

I’ve had multiple occasions throughout my life where I have been aware of a presence (various locations) and when I was very young I apparently saw my Grandfather after he had died - what made my Mum believe me is that I described what he was wearing and it was clothes he wore when she was a girl that I had never seen. I like to believe that after death we will be reunited with our loved ones somehow. There is so much we don’t understand in this universe that I believe anything could be possible. It gives me peace to think that one day I might be in the presence of my Dad and other family members once again. I’m so sorry for your loss, eventually the memories that populate your head will make you smile instead of cry. Sending much love.

changeme4this · 17/08/2026 00:49

When Dad died, he was in a dream I had sitting and waiting half way up an underground train station type set up (no trains, that’s just what it looked like). I thought that a really odd thing to dream of so the memory stayed with me.

when mum died last year, a few weeks later again in a dream was mum and dad sitting side by side like in a car (but no car) laughing and looking younger and happier.

they “drove” off in front of me.

whether that means he waited for her and they wanted me to know they were happy and ok I don’t know, but I haven’t had anything like it again with them.

I would like to think there’s a nicer after life for those who deserve it.

AJLOAL · 17/08/2026 00:56

Many years ago when I was 18 or 19 I was visiting a friend who lived 100 miles away. We went to a spiritualist meeting held in a church. Neither of us had ever been to anything like this before but we were intrigued. Anyway, I was picked for a message. It was my Nana that had come through. This spiritualist lady said things no-one else could possibly have known, even saying that a Mr ? was there and to ask the other girl about him. My Nana called both me and my Mum her girls so when I next saw my Mum I asked her about this Mr ?. He was their neighbour when my Mum was a child.
The medium said so much to me that I know for an ABSOLUTE fact there is more than this existence.

MintyElephant · 17/08/2026 06:08

I’m so so sorry for your loss.

This is hard to explain and not everybody understands so I’ll try my best it but it is bizarre and proves to me passed loves one don’t leave us.

My cousin was only 24 when he died tragically and suddenly. His younger brother, my cousin, was working with my husband after his death, they were driving home from work - my husband had his phone in his van and was asking it (by using voice control) to ring his brother hands free whilst he was driving, he was saying ‘ring bro’ (my husbands brother is named as ‘bro’ on his phone) it wasn’t recognising it after a few attempts. My cousin then got annoyed listening to this and shouted ‘ring bro!’ And my husbands phone then started ringing my cousin that had passed, his name absolutely does not sound like bro, the complete opposite, there is no way you can confuse his name with the word bro, his name isn’t one syllable and just absolutely no way it would have picked up his name being said instead, without saying his name for example it picked up the word ‘Stephen’ and dialled Stephen. They both stared at his phone in disbelief. My cousin is around, was with his brother and showing him a sign that he is watching over him.

I do truly believe in reincarnation and after life also.

Mh67 · 17/08/2026 07:36

When i was a child my mum used to play with my hair and when she died I was in a room alone and felt someone playing with my hair.

exiledfromcornwall · 17/08/2026 08:29

Shortly before an elderly relative died of cancer, he started calling out a first name, which was the name of his long dead brother. We are convinced his brother had come to get him, to help him to pass over.

Also, not long after my mother died, I was in the garden one day and a robin appeared very close to where I was standing and just stood there looking up at me. I remember reading somewhere that a sighting of a robin can indicate the presence of a loved one who has passed.

Scrambledcrumpets · 17/08/2026 08:36

I lost my mum at 17. It was sudden and traumatic and I have never experienced pain like it.

Fast forward to a couple of years ago and I was driving with my family (as the passenger). Out of nowhere i felt a wave of pain and grief like I had tapped back in to the moment I lost my mum. I've not experienced that in all the years between despite experiencing other losses.

When we arrived at our destination I got phone reception and received a message from a dear friend who had just had to turn off the life support for her partner. I didn't even know they were in hospital (due to her partners request for privacy which my friend respected).

I believe I felt my friends pain. I cannot explain the experience any other way.

Another example is my late father's funeral. I spoke about him, my childhood memories and the things i loved about him. One memory was being kids and my sisters and I running down his car battery whilst he played cricket by winding his electric windows up and down all day. It was the 80s and they were a real novelty. He had to get a jump start. After the wake we were leaving and all the windows on our car were down. My husband thinks the car had a moment, but i believe it was my dad.

My personal belief is that we remain connected to those we lose. Energy can never be destroyed, only created and transferred. I am not religious but I do believe there is something after life, and that we carry those we love with us. So keep talking to your husband. I'm sure he will be with you
