Anyone used their car like a mini camper van?

I was recently in a local forest (it's a tourist attraction not secluded) there is a car park area where people park their campervans and motor homes. There was a couple there who had the back seats of their car down, lots of foam pads and cushions/duvet. They were sitting looking at the view with their boot open.Thay had a flask and some cakes Essentially they had turned the back of their car into a bed/settee. I have often thought about getting a campervan but am put off by the faff of hooking it up etc as well as the cost and I am quite nervous about sleeping in it as a solo traveller. Does anyone on here do this? It strikes me as a great idea and a good halfway point. Then I could just get cheap hotel/b and b stays. Anyone here done similar and if yes, how did you make it all comfortable etc?

I need to check if my seats go flat or if I can make it comfy at least

On beaches, vista points etc....

I can't see how it would be much better than sitting in the driver's seat, putting a cushion on a bench, or taking a folding chair to the forest. Seems a complicated way to sit.

What make/model of car have you got, OP?

I have VW T cross

I know, but my point stands if you replace 'forest' with any other location.

Also you can sit in the car if it's raining or chilly

I always have a blanket, raincoat/wellies and a camping chair in my boot, for impromptu walks/sitting.
I can't see why anything else is needed and I've sat in many locations.

I reckon you could make it really cosy! Some people use folding chair bed things. Bean bags is a cute idea too.

I'm looking into this at the moment, I've just spent 3 nights camping and it was a hassle putting the tent up on my own so I'm thinking a micro camper would be easier. I've only just found out they don't have to be converted, you can just buy the module and take in and out as required.

My family run an RV park and campsite. Loads of people car camp. A regular sized SUV can easily fit an air mattress in the back when the seats are folded down. It looks fun, if a little cramped.

Yes, that’s a boot jump - that’s what I have. It’s great for when you use your car as your daily drive but you also want to use it as a camper sometimes. I just leave mine in the boot all the time - it’s got a drawer at the back that has a camping stove and some kitchen items in it. Means you can make a cuppa anywhere 😊.

I’ve got a double one that can be used as a single bed with a chair and table. Just spent a week on holiday in it - was very comfy and cosy.

Downsides would be that you need somewhere to store it if you take it out, and you’d need 2 people.
