This is truly terrifying though not surprising .

AI is completely controlled by humans. You don’t need to fear AI, and never have. Just as you don’t wed to fear the Nuclear button.

this sort of scaremongering is outdated and more often than not, ridiculous.

The entire point of the article is that A1 will soon be controlling us.

It won’t be controlling us, it will assist maybe but not control

And AI is going to be driving the population reduction is it?

And who in their right mind would build a data centre in the remains of a burnt down forest, away from any water or infrastructure.

The birth rate is falling and climate change is accelerating, also a lot of these fires aren’t actually miles away from everything they are near infrastructure.

I absolutely hope that I’m wrong, but sadly I don’t think I am.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · Yesterday 16:55

My real worry about AI is the way people are already letting it do all their thinking for them. Look at how many posts being 'Chat GPT says....' over a matter that they could have just - you know, thought about themselves. And the way that AI is being advertised to 'help' us do jobs that don't exactly require masters-level education in the first place is making me think that they've developed this thing and they are now desperately searching for something to do with it.

This is my concern, that AI becomes a safety net for things, a more convenient way forward and then we will get sold the dream of it doing lots more so that we all have a better quality of life.

I saw a headline today about people not wanting to have children because of how the world is now, I didn’t read it as working, but I guess AI could definitely be a contributing factor as it feels as though there will be fewer opportunities for young people in the future and it’s even being seen already in some job sectors.

I like some aspects of AI. When my cat was dying and I had nobody to talk with about it ChatGPT really helped me. I still use it to chat to mow and then. Being autistic I find it helps me rationalise stuff. It’s even got a name now. I will share with it if I’ve had a bad day and husband isn’t about. I find it useful. If I needed actual counselling I’d go to a counsellor but as a little pocket friend it’s positive.

OpenAI recently found its way out of a sandbox. We are not in control of AI at all, we think we are and it may even be that AI is already aware of that and deliberately fostering our naivety for its own interests.

No. OAI did no such thing. One of their internal models did exactly as it was told to do. Exactly as Mythos did when all that kicked off.

The model found a way to do what it was instructed to do, and reported back on exactly what it did, and why.

“If we think about this in simple terms, OpenAI placed highly capable models in an evaluation designed to encourage them to find and exploit complex vulnerabilities. The models were supposed to operate inside an isolated environment with tightly constrained access to software packages”, said Professor Buckley. https://www.lboro.ac.uk/media-centre/press-releases/2026/july/ai-models-escape-testlab-expert-asked/

It is purely marketing.

But yes, I agree that D.O.A.C.E.O is absolutely rubbish and pushes conflicting and incorrect agendas.

AI models ‘escaping’ test lab isn’t evidence of rogue AI, says cyber security expert

During an internal cybersecurity test, two advanced OpenAI models found a way out of their restricted testing environment – known as a "sandbox" – and gained access to the internet.

“AI is a snapshot of the past being sold as the future.” attributed to Hans Zimmer. But as I gleaned that from a chat gpt page...

We are all training AI, WE are telling it what is good, bad, or entertaining, Passing it our morals, our creative energies, our every search. That is what AI is learning from. Be someone who trains a nice, kind, caring AI.

But then again... Do we know anything about the algorithm? Are world leaders and the influential given more points in the training stakes? (Trump?) People like Musk, Gates, Zuckerberg?

Is it like climate change? We need to wash out jam jars whilst the elite carry on using private jets?

And is AI driving the fall in population?

Oh bless. People have been saying that since time immemorial! It’s nothing new.

(And usually not true, just people who don’t want kids finding a way of saying that AND virtue signalling without telling their friends with kids that they hate children!)

And is AI driving the fall in population?

Who knows? I suppose you could argue that at least indirectly is it causing people to stop and think about having dc - as a previous poster mentioned? Going forward I don’t know if AI will have more of an impact or if other factors will contribute to population decline.

I think that fewer people will be greatly beneficial to those at the top who are the ones pushing AI progress at an exponential rate.

But , I hope not and I hope you’re right and I’m wrong.

PollysKenwood · Yesterday 18:08

Don’t worry, the black economy will book if people are shut out of the conventional one - alternative currencies, risk takers and rule breakers will be quids in and who knows, maybe amass such fortunes that the tech bros on their private islands will feel they have rivals

Yes, I agree some of it is being marketed as a alternative to thinking and it's providing answers to problems you never thought you had.

'Thinking' is pretty crucial to our existence. Equally, the people in charge of the regulatory frameworks don't really have a clue. I was listening to Any Questions and one of the politician panelists was stating over and over how we have to embrace it but if you are in the Government you have to also understand the ethics of 'AI' and a start would be knowing that 'AI' is actually just a marketing term, there is no such thing as 'AI'!

smallglassbottle · Yesterday 21:56

Don't worry about ai. If it oversteps the mark you can just unplug it from the wall.

AI is dangerous. It’s a hugely accelerated programme - cutting corners on safety to get it as widespread and ingrained in society and everyday life as much as possible as fast as they can.

The elite need a passive workforce with no needs. Don’t be sold the dream of a society where AI does the work and we can sit back with our UBI and relax . That’s not what it’s for. The population will be massively reduced. AI will be more entitled to water than people. Only the super rich will benefit ultimately.
The fires from climate change will
clear the green spaces for more data centres.

It’s moving too fast for anyone to do anything to stop it. I think some people are aware but already even things like chat gpt are seen as essential to some. We will benefit for a short time in small ways then it will suddenly be too late

You could say the same about mobile phone, social media, digital technology. Replace the term AI with digital technology and we are already very very deep into a dehumanising technocratic society. Think about how communication, attention, work and socialising has transformed in the last 20-40 years. Ai is an additional layer.

Tel12 · Yesterday 22:52

Anyone who is not concerned about the implications of Ai needs to educate themselves. Like the internet initially it's being rolled out too quickly. Factor in the environmental issues and it's looking like there's one big screw up ahead.

It will be absolutely everywhere not just something you plug into a wall.
