Takeaways. Why are they all so disgusting these days?

I hardly ever have takeaways these days as invariably they are dreadful and not worth the money. Tonight I thought I'd give a Chinese takeaway a go. It was absolutely the worst takeaway I've ever had. The sauce was full of sugar. The meal was like slabs of dog meat. It was absolutely disgustingly vile. I haven't had a nice takeaway in years. They used to taste so different. How do they get away with it?

What is takeaway?

They have gone downhill, luckily we have a very good Indian restaurant in our area that does delivery. Pricy, so an occasional treat, but worth it. Lush it is.

I find them very expensive for what you get. I’d rather either make an occasion of it and go to a favourite restaurant or get a good quality ready meal from Waitrose, Cook, Charlie Bingham. Ready meals much cheaper than a takeaway and I know what I’m getting

I am always disappointed with take aways. The exception is fish and chips at the sea side, but I always carefully read reviews.

I find food I cook myself far better and I can make ingredient substitutions to make it healthier.

I have the Curry Guy cook book and you can make British Indian Restaurant recipes at home from scratch and they taste fantastic. I also cook my own Korean food at home and it's sooo much better than Chinese take away. I haven't had the latter for many many years.

I have just eaten an Indian takeout from our favourite restaurant and it just wasn't the same. Really didn't enjoy it and it was my idea! Maybe they have got new chefs in - been going to this restaurant and getting takeouts for many years and never had a duff one before.

LightningTree · 25/07/2026 21:51

I think it’s basically due to cost cutting to try to keep prices at a level people will pay.

RoseValleyRambles · 25/07/2026 22:07

Same issue here. People recommend places locally but they're unfailingly a bit grim. We've got the Kwok wan Chinese takeaway cookbook now, and it's brill. Haven't ordered out for a good while.

@Wegovydoesntdoforme slightly off topic but yes MSG is the key to a good Chinese food. It was avoided for may years basically due to racism. All started with ' Chinese restaurant syndrome ' myth.

My husband was blue lighted to hospital when a Chinese meal (in a restaurant not a takeaway) triggered atrial fibrillation and his heart rate was over 200. Nothing racist about it at all. Now we have to make sure restaurants don't use it. Luckily our local Chinese restaurant doesn't.

Several good takeaways near us, and usually when we go on holiday they are pretty good too. Of course, the prices are going up, but that’s inevitable at the moment.

ohtowinthelottery · 26/07/2026 08:06

Can't remember the last time we had a takeaway - apart from fish and chips at the seaside.
At home, we cook everything from scratch so I think our taste buds are used to very different quantities of salt and sugar (or substitutes) to that used in takeaways or supermarket ready meals. The quality of the meat in takeaways is undoubtedly poor so we'd much rather buy from a local butcher and cook our own curries/stir fries/sweet and sour, then we know what we're eating.

I hate Takeaway and Chinese takeaway is the worst of them all .I buy a good loaf of bread and some cheeses and meats if I don't want to cook.

Something best avoided, imo.

Vodkamartini3olives · 26/07/2026 17:24

@MochaMadness AFib can also be triggered by alcohol, caffeine, grapefruit, cranberry,.leafy greens. It doesn't mean these things are inherently dangerous or poisonous it just means you should avoid them if you have a sensitivity to them. It is widely acknowledged the negative messaging about MSG is racial.

Ok. so when my husband asks a Chinese restaurant if they use MSG he's being racist? Not trying to save his life. He's had an angioplasty and a double bypass. MSG at this point could kill him.

@MochaMadness- That's not what I'm saying at all. Two different issues
1 some people can have a sensitivity msg and should avoid it, just like some have a sensitivity to gluten or peanuts. Doesn't mean they are dangerous or bad to everyone and these things are not in general bad or dangerous or poison as described by the op.

2 There is a myth that MSG is poisonous or '.bad' due to a letter published in a medical journal in 1968 which blamed it for ' Chinese restaurant syndrome'. This has been debunked by global health organizations.
MSG is widely used in Asian cuisine and is a staple in most Japanese & Chinese homes. It's used in much the same way as soy or fish sauce.
