How was your DC the day after having fixed braces?

DS14 is having fixed braces put on next Monday, and DH wants to plan a day out with lunch on Tuesday. I am not sure if DS will be in much pain and I think he probably won’t be eating anything very hard or crunchy.
Please let me know your experiences - would your DC have managed/enjoyed a low activity day out with lunch the next day?

Yeh, probably not a great idea planning a day out.

Having said that, my daughter was absolutely fine. She said it was a little sore the evening she got it fitted.
Next day, barely even mentioned it and no pain, so fingers crossed your son has a similar experience 🤞

I had braces as a young teen. Agree with most of the comments above, lunch out is not a great idea as eating will probably be painful for a few days. Make sure you have plenty of yoghurts, soup, ice cream, smoothies etc available at home! And painkillers too of course. WRT a day out - I’d be cautious about booking anything non-refundable but your child may be up to doing something low key. Best to play it by ear as everyone will experience it differently.

It takes a week to become normal. The next day meal would be unpleasant. I speak from having fixed braces myself a few years back and two DC in recent years.

Yeah, give it a day or so.

using wax can really help in the early days.

i had braces aged 30, went to see a mate for a drink, yabbered and drank loads of wine and woke up with lips the size of tyres, cut to ribbons 😂

Sore - wouldn’t have wanted a meal out - à treat like that she’d love but not the day after - she wasn’t eating normally for a few days

Oh, I wish I'd have known how bad the first few days were going to be! My daughter was pretty much on a pureated diet for a few days and then had to just have soft things like pasta until about day six. She was in a lot of pain and kept dribbling all the time. All the orthodontist told us was that she might be " a bit achy" for a couple of days but it was definitely worse than that. Good luck!

My eldest had a brace but more convincingly, I'm a teacher who also has a year 9, soon to be year 10 tutor group. I've seen dozens of students the day after their brace fitting and been the main point of contact for several of them very recently. Nearly all of them are in some level of discomfort necessitating painkillers, most struggle at lunch and a surprising number have wires pop out and need to go back to the orthodontist. DD's broke twice in the first week but was fine afterwards.

Braces can be painful for a few days after getting them or having them adjusted. My Dad always made Shepherd"s pie when my brother and i got our braces done. They will take a bot of getting used to, avoid hard or sticky food.

Lots of pain. Buy lots of painkillers. Ice cream is soothing.

Lunch out definitely not a good idea. He'll be limited in what he can eat which may make going to a restaurant a bit depressing. Cinema with ice cream is a much better idea.
