I first heard of him in Reilly: Ace of Spies and loved The Dish and The Hunt for Red October

Sad news.

In the late 90s, Merlin was just tremendous!
What a sad loss.

Yes! Wonderful. And then he could turn around and frighten you in Event Horizon. Fabulous talent.

Middlemarch123 · Yesterday 09:33

Loved him in Peaky Blinders, he was so talented, seemed a really lovely person. Sad news.

minimuffs2651 · Yesterday 09:37

Aww so sad. I had a teen crush on him!

mbosnz · Yesterday 09:41

I really hope that his last great crusade to prevent the quarry near his vineyard manages to prevail.

i have just looked at his instagram - i so wish i had discovered it before.
what a lovely human

The Tudors was a guilty pleasure for me and my daughter, and I just loved him as Wolsey. And in everything else. Sad news.

Is 2026 the new 2016?!

I was only saying something similar to DH this morning. The last time we had so many well known people die in quick succession like this was 2016, it seemed to me.

It's really sad seeing some of the loveliest actors going now, and some really not that old either.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · Yesterday 10:00

That's a great shame. Think The first thing I saw him in was A cry in the dark with Meryl Streep. And then obviously Jurassic Park. Hated all the sequels but the joy of the first one never fades for me.

Find the skits he did during lockdown, there’s about 10 in total and they’re brilliant. He had a quirky sense of fun and was hugely talented as a comedic writer/actor.

Oh yes, he was wonderful.

Sad news, he was always such a pleasure to watch: so measured and dignified. Would never have guessed he was 78!

RIP Mr Neill

So sad about this. There's a screening of The Hunt for the Wilderpeople in London at the end of this month with director Taika Waititi. Sam was absolutely wonderful in that. It's going to make it especially poignant.

Deadringer · Yesterday 10:46

Gorgeous man, may he rip.

partystress · Yesterday 11:00

Really sad to read this news. Hunt for the Wilderpeople is one of my favourite films. Also the very strange, but gorgeous ‘Dean Spanley’, with IIRC Peter O’Toole.

“Reilly Ace of Spies” is etched into my memory as I had a massive teenage crush on Sam Neill. As did my best friend at school so a lot of time was spent talking about the programme. As it was based on a real person/true story, and this was pre-internet, there were lots of articles in the papers about it and you could buy a sort of brochure based on the series with the history, photos of the time, and of course photos of Sam as the character.

i continued to think he was a great actor. More recently i did like him in Peaky Blinders.

RIP.

My best friend came round with a videotape of Omen III and we bunked off school to watch it and a lifetime crush was born.
Also watched him in Reilly Ace of Spies and Kane and Abel with my late dad who loved spy dramas.
RIP Sam

I think I must be like your dad. Since that time spy/espionage novels and factual stuff has remained an interest. Think I’ve read all of John Le Carre, Graham Greene, lots of books about the Cambridge Five. I do think this interest started with Reilly of spies.

Do you remember A Perfect Spy with Peter Egan?

MrsShawnHatosy · Yesterday 17:28

Gutted. A lovely seeming man, loved him in everything I saw him in. Especially The Piano. And quietly sexy in a very attractive way.

Vaguely but I remember the book more. Will try to find it again to watch it. I’ve watched the Alec Guinness version of Tinker, Tailor endless amounts of times

TheMadGardener · Today 01:54

So sad. He was a lovely man. I've followed his IG for years with photos of his vineyard and his animals.
