Did anyone else find afternoon tea disappointing rather than enjoyable?

Went to an afternoon tea today and didn't like it.It was horrible. I would have preferred sandwiches to rolls and the cakes didn't taste very nice, so I didn't eat them and I had a scone with cream and gem, but all in all, I wouldn't do an afternoon tea again.

I rang the cafe and asked if you can specify what they give you and generally no. You pay the price and get a standard set od sandwiches and cakes. If you want something other than the standard set menu then you pay extra like if you want egg mayonnaise instead of cheese then that is an extra cost on top of the standard afternoon tea price. Its just a rip off and I would never do it again

I love a good afternoon tea. Though sadly a cheap one is rarely worth the effort.

It was your friend's birthday party, though, wasn't it? So presumably the menu was organised around what she wanted, rather than what you wanted.

Again, I don't really understand why you've felt the need to start a thread about this. You had a meal you didn't like. OK. Don't do it again, then. No need to announce it to the world, is there? Why do you need everyone to agree with you? Some people like afternoon teas, some people don't. So what?

This is a lot like the thread where you got really cross because some people liked a toothbrush that you didn't like.

Worst I experienced was at a busy garden centre with ex colleagues, where you had to order in advance what sort of sandwich. (An ordinary sandwich, not little finger ones.) And the cost per head wasn’t exactly cheap.
Five of us, but one couldn’t make it last minute - sudden onset of bad ‘runs’ caught from a little Gdd,

Waiter told us we’d have to pay for her anyway, since her food had been made. We explained that she couldn’t very well help being ill last minute, but he wouldn't budge. But we could share her food between us, or take it home.

And TBH the cakes were those uber-fancy, sickly little ones - personally I didn’t care for them anyway.

Eventually I said in fairly forthright tones, that in the circs. I was pretty disgusted at their meanness - the place was a gold mine (it was) and I’d be writing a ‘strong’ letter to the management.

He came back a little while later to say that we wouldn’t have to pay for her after all.
