Bored over eating the same old salad again and again. Can I have some ideas of making them more exciting and enjoyable. I like pretty much everything except cheese 🤮 tia

Tuna?
beans?
ready cooked chicken?

Pickles such as beetroot and onion and gherkins, have a look in the salad dressing aisle in the supermarket for ideas.
Roasted chickpeas go nicely on a salad.

I always add grapes. If doing a full on salad rather than the usual lettuce, tomatoes and cucumber, I add sweetcorn, celery, red onion and sliced peppers too.

Ladybird69 · 05/07/2026 13:48

Thanks for some good ideas. @Pondering2026 oh that reminds me that my mum used to add chopped apples! 👍

Fruit such as watermelon or pomegranate.

Good homemade dressings. Different oils like nut oils, sesame, balsamic vinegar, light soy

Nuts, walnuts, almonds, cashews, especially if lightly toasted.

Fresh herbs, mint and parsley, coriander.

I like chopped kiwi in a green salad.
Roasted veg, toasted seeds and/or nuts.
Various vinegars for dressing. Or squeeze half a lemon or lime over it.
Chopped herbs, basil / chive/ mint leaves add a lot, parsley for tabbouleh.
Often quinoa/ bulgar wheat/cous cous.

Watermelon works well. Also try walnuts and pears.

On the chopped apple thing you mentioned, you need to put them in lemon juice to stop them going brown.

LadyChilli · 05/07/2026 13:56

Hummus and jalapeños.

Nugg · 05/07/2026 13:59

DH has been making a lot of salads lately.

Apples / grapes
Toasted walnut / almonds / pine nuts /sesame seeds
Croutons, and garlic / herbs ones
Bacon lardons fried crispy
Different dressings - asian / soy, vinagrette, creamy dill, cesar etc
Pickled pink onions - so easy to make and delicious!

He also bought a mandolin, which makes for very attractive sliced raw salads

Sunblush tomatoes brighten things up no end. I like to add avocado and coriander, with a few pine nuts if I can find where I've hidden them.

Flannelfeet · 05/07/2026 14:10

Crispy chorizo, chicken and new potatoes topped over lettuce, red onion, cucumber and a mix of red and yellow tomatoes with a drizzle of mayo 😋.

Meadowfinch · 05/07/2026 14:12

Easy salad - rough-grate equal quantity of dessert apple & carrot, coat in a small amount of French dressing. Add a handful of sultanas and flaked almonds or walnuts.
Filling on its own, good as a side dish for pork.

OnGoldenPond · 05/07/2026 14:57

Use fresh baby spinach leaves instead of lettuce. Much tastier and high in iron.

Ladybird69 · 05/07/2026 15:14

Ooo wow such great ideas.
