Sending texts with your temperature and coughing updates is not appealing

THAT'S the message to send.

'I am not your mother.'

Sounds like he has COVID. I had it for 6 weeks and it was horrible. I can't imagine having to go through it on my own. When you are feeling ill you do need a bit of sympathy.

He has a cough and a temperature. It could be caused by any number of different viruses or bacteria.

Or, "Was this meant for me? Did you mean to send it to your mum?"

I am at the end of my tether with responses

Are they expecting ongoing sympathy from you?

An endless messaged conversation about it sounds tiresome.

Or... do you want me to ask your mum to come round? 🤣

StillWate · 04/07/2026 22:17

It’s so tiresome

I think the expectation is of help from me, aa I’m the competent carer type

not biting, but also the ick

Was about to say it sounds like you don’t really care about him!

If my DP was feeling really rough and sent me messages about having a high temp and coughing, I’d have some sympathy and send him a virtual hug and maybe have a little treat delivered to him the next day! If you honestly don’t give a shit that he feels so ill, then yes, end it. Even as a FWB I’d expect a bare level of polite communication, but if you can’t be arsed then just tell him that.

StillWate · 05/07/2026 00:57

I do care that he’s feeling so unwell and am kind. I’m not a monster @SnowflakeSmasher86

I guess he feels sorry for himself and wants some attention. I get you though, having grown up with a hypochondriac DF I’ve not got much patience for that kind of thing.

A friend from abroad was recently in UK, and got a cold while here. She flew home and about 10 days later I sent her a general ‘how’s things’ message. Her reply was all about how she was ‘slowly recovering’ and ‘being gentle’ with herself after her ‘illness’. I’d forgotten she even had a cold. I got a bit of a friend-ick from that.

"You've sent me [insert number] messages today telling me your temperature. What do you want me to do, draw a graph?"

I agree with the taking it very seriously approach. Send back google or chat gpt ideas of what it could be (the more scary sounding the better) and tell him to call 111 or you will. Every time he messages with further updates you need to escalate until eventually you say you are going to call 999. Hopefully at some point he switches into reassuring you it's not that bad, which is your cue to say 'thank god, I'm so relieved, have a good nights sleep and speak tomorrow'. Then go out for the day tomorrow with your phone switched off.

It may backfire badly. My hypochondriac EXH would have jumped at this and called 999 himself as he would’ve believed that he was dying. He was dying many times from multiple imaginary health issues. Thankfully he is an EX now.
