What should I do in Sheffield next week?

Mid-week for one night in the city centre. I’ll arrive around mid-day by train, have an event in the evening, and will be free all the following day.

I’ve visited before but not for decades so I’ll be intrigued to see it again. I like architecture, and green spaces (not municipal parks) and galleries and properly impressive shopping. And I’ll need to eat!

So what’s unmissable?

Oh, well done! I’m delighted for you, @IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads.😄

I’ve owned several things over the decades, but have moved around a lot so things disappear. I have some of their glassware in storage, and am keeping my eye on some cutlery to celebrate my next house move. But the architecture of the factory building is a real draw - and I’d be in the Peak District almost without effort.

Theres a free art gallery in the top of the central library which is worth a visit. Also if you are lucky and are coming on a wednesday you might match up with the folk train. www.ourfaveplaces.co.uk/where-to-go/folk-train/

It’ll surely be better than a hotel breakfast! As long as the coffee is decent …

Is the Cathedral worth visiting? I often like going to choral evensong in new (to me) cities and may be able to fit it in before my event.

I think so, but it's perhaps an acquired taste: it's not spectacular like Lincoln or Durham. There is a modern extension which I think gives the place its character. And a memorial to William Sterndale Bennett, a 19th century composer and native of Sheffield, who more or less kept English music alive between Handel and Sullivan.

Interesting …

(Composers are some of my favourite people.)

Thanks for all these recommendations! I had a brilliant couple of days.

Took the 272 bus to Hathersage for the David Mellor Centre. Fabulous journey, (via Ecclesall Road!) up into the hills. The DM centre was magical. Really glorious lunch, and the little museum of his work was fascinating.

Went to my event, then to The Pearl at Park Hill for drinks as the sun set. Architecture and bar were both breathtaking.

Found the Peace Gardens by accident the next morning during a little wander after breakfast at Marmaduke’s in Cambridge St. Also strolled through Leah’s Yard.

Cab to Bench in Nether Edge for lunch. (Will treasure the memory!) Passed the gates of the Botanical Gardens on the way back into the city centre.

Ended my trip at Sheffield Tap, courtesy of a kind stranger who insisted I must see it.

Perfect 48 hrs in the Steel City!

Glad you enjoyed it.

Thanks - was pretty impressed with myself! This weather is definitely not suitable for racing about in.
