We had a bird in our house the other day, must have been in overnight as the windows were closed!

Dymaxion · 03/07/2026 21:39

Squirrel , mice, bees , rats and next doors cats believe that we are also their territory. might have encouraged this to discourage the mice and rats

Buynow · 03/07/2026 21:47

All the usual insects.
Rats in the roof, mice brought in by the cat. Once a squirrel in the roof.
A bat came in the bedroom window one night, I caught it in a fishing net.

Too many to count! We have the back door open a lot. The worst was thousands of maggots crawling in from the rain, the best was a small fox who ran around the kitchen a couple of times and legged it when they realised we were sitting at the table.

Rats, mice, other people's cats, birds, frogs. We once opened the front door & a dog shot in.

We came home from holiday to an awful smell somewhere in the house.
Turned out the cat had brought in a mouse which had escaped his clutches then hidden behind the piano and died 😪

I have a terrible mouse phobia. We rented a flat for 6 months and 2 doors away was semi derelict . One day the builders moved in and apparently disturbed a lot of mice. They somehow got into our place. One night we had them up the curtains, in the bathroom , over the bed and in the kitchen cupboards. I had to move out until rentokil had done their job. We saved and managed to buy a house near the woods. Our neighbour's have had the odd infestation of mice . Luckily we have 2 cats who have taken mummy’s phobia seriously and no rodents have ever crossed our path or entered our home.

When I was a child a nearly full grown rook fell down the kitchen chimney - it had kicked its way through through the nest at the top. It made a heck of a sooty mess around the room before my mother managed to chase it out of the window.
A friend had a badger stuck in her cat-flap (LOL, sounds rather rude!). She didn't dare get near it, but after some minutes it managed to back its way out.

Teacup40 · 03/07/2026 22:28

A pigeon it came in through the open window once I shut the door on it and called for back up (my grandad) 🤣.

A mouse, but I was on holiday near a forest in a Nordic destination at the time and it was three years ago 😉

😂😂😂

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 03/07/2026 22:34

My cat dragged a live wood pigeon through the cat flap. That was the most stressful gift I've had. Mice, voles etc are much easier to deal with.

TheReplacement · 03/07/2026 22:44

The naughtier of my cats has brought in a live magpie, a bat and a frog.

DS was doing some work by the back door and found a small tropical snake coiled round our drainpipe - we presumed it must have been dumped so managed to catch it (well DH and DS did while I squealed and ran away) and they took it to a reptile shop who then sold it on for £400.

Spotted a muntjack deer on the Ring trying to get in our door one evening.

roycroppersshopper · 03/07/2026 22:58

A rat once, got it out and made sure it couldn't come back. Yuk.

Why do you ask OP?

Wednesdaysotherchild · 03/07/2026 23:02

A man, a little boy and a dog have all made it inside. I should block up the holes probably…

Slugs, woodlice, silverfish, mice , a squirrel and random trespassing cats. Not all at once.

What does a silverfish look like? 😬😬 I have heard of them once or twice but I dont think ive seen one.

Galantine · 03/07/2026 23:09

A bear in the garage once when we were living in Vermont.

Flannelfeet · 03/07/2026 23:10

Oh, that is so cute.
I remember when a bat crash landed in my parent's garden. It sounded like the alarm ovens have. Confused us for a good hour.

Awww I loved him so much 🥰. Was very sad when the sspca told us to release him at night. He spent the full day with us sleeping in a wee box away from the cats.

I miss him so much, wee vlad I called him 😆 🤣

British bats are so tiny, but so cute 😄

We thought it was a baby bat but the man said it was an adult, so cute and fluffy. ❤️

Raccoons

My old, old, old house, two field mice. No idea why, I had a cat. Gor one out, the other was chased to death.

My old house, a bat. Absolutely no idea how, I came home to it after work.

Current house, field mice (repeatedly and a bit fed up with catching them and driving them miles away to set them free). Ants, woodlice, spiders galore (one currently setting up base camp in my downstairs loo after I evicted two on Tuesday) wasps living in the wall, ladybirds nesting, beetles, moths and ginny spinners are regulars at this time of year.

I have aways lived on the outskirts of countryside, and as such has had to share a home with all sorts.
