Body hair mystery (to me)

Could I Google this? Absolutely. But I don't want to.

How does your body hair, other than your head hair, know to stop growing when it reaches a certain length? You can shave it or trim it and it grows back, but when it reaches that certain point, it doesn't get any longer. What's the science?

Saturday nights don't get much more exciting than this.

No idea but....once you are in menopause the leg hairs stop growing.....mine have been the same length for years 😂

Hmm, will someone please tell my leg hairs this? I'm way past menopause and still have hairy legs and toes! Strangely, I've never grown much hair under my arms

Teeth aren't a mystery, we are born with two sets in our skulls. Freaky.

I think with hair there is a little person inside us in charge of each follicle with a tape measure. I'm not a scientist but I think they would agree.

Bit like the numbskulls..kids comic strip 70s comic, topper, whizzer&chips that sort of thing.

This thread has made me smile! A few springs ago, after a winter of (not horribly serious but serious) illness, incapacity and a serious absence of grooming, I ran a bath and got my new razor out to get summer ready. Well, I neednt have bothered, my 57 year old legs and armpits were almost hairless! I didnt know wether to cheer or cry!

SparklesWithSynergy · 28/06/2026 19:36

Surely it degrades at the end?

If it take 3 weeks to grow from 1 inch to 12, and it dies off after 3 weeks, it wont grow longer than 12 inches?

It’s mad isn’t it. Similar to the mystery of teeth, why do we not have a third set or continuously shed them every decade? I feel like that would be quite efficient for us as predators, but also horrific.

Hahaha can you imagine having to do an important presentation having just lost your two front teeth like a six year old? 😂

@freelancescientist, so is it the case that some people can grow their (head) hair longer than others can? Can the growth phase vary between individuals? I can’t say I’ve ever wanted to have waist-length hair like some women and girls have, but I also don’t think my hair would grow that long, the longest mine has ever been was probably bra band length when I was much younger- I think it stopped there.

Yes, some people can only grow their hair to shoulder length, for example, some to ankle length or longer.
My hair grows to a couple of inches past hipbone length, but no longer.

I am quite happy with thinking everything is programmed somehow in our body. You could think of million of why about so many aspects of human body.

I said this to DH the other week - why don't we have to trim our eyebrows all the time?

It's so weird really. My pubic hair would coat my knees if I allowed it free rein, which is ridiculous because, whatever sexual-attractant purposes it may exist for, having it knee-length does the exact opposite.

It would shed at a certain point.
If the evolutionary 'point' of it is to enhance the smell, then the longer the better I suppose!

It isn't true! Have you never seen one of your dental X-rays? There's no extra set lurking in your jawbones.
On a baby's or young child's X-rays, the adult set of teeth can clearly be seen behind the baby teeth. There's no third set.

I have some wisdom teeth that never came out so they are like an extra set in my skull.

Bumply · 29/06/2026 01:05

There’s people with genetic mutation that grow long hair on their faces and palms. Whatever controls the normal short body hair length doesn’t get switched off and hairs just grow like the hair on their heads.

It absolutely is all programmed, programmed to grow, reproduce cells, make cells die, fix / repair DNA (not always successfully of course!) … the list goes on

Ive often wondered about this as i had an anomalous pubic hair at one point so decided that air might have something to do with it.

An ex partner of mine asked why i had a black circle tattooed on my mons pubis. I didnt, so sent her back with a torch for a full report 😂
She grabbed some tweezers as there was a tiny tip of hair, started to pull, and pulled out this huge coil of a single pube that when pulled out of its spring shape was about 30cm long! Must have just kept growing and growing under the skin and was dark enough to look like a small circle tattoo. Was weird that it didnt stop growing at standard full pube length.

ainsleysanob · 29/06/2026 14:29

I plucked an hair from my hip on Friday that was 4 inches long. My hip. Why?

That isn't the same as a complete third set of teeth though! Some people have wisdom teeth, some don't, some have them in the jaw but they never erupt.

OriginalSkang · 30/06/2026 16:58

My hair on my head stops growing at a certain point, as well as the body hair :(
