Are schools relaxing uniform rules during this 30°C heatwave?

Hi everyone,

With this 30°C heatwave, I'm just wondering what everyone else's schools are doing about uniforms right now?

Are they still strictly enforcing the whole lot—blazers on, top buttons done up, ties on, shirts tucked in, and long socks? Or have they actually loosened the rules a bit?

Alternatively, have any of you just taken matters into your own hands and sent your DC in wearing something cooler anyway? Just want to see if other schools are actually being sensible this week or if they're still being super strict!

We are in the NE so it's under 30C here but our youngest is at secondary school and they are wearing PE kit all week. We've had DC at the school since 2019 and this is the first time they've had this relaxation for heat. Much more sensible than wearing tights and polyester skirts in the heat (last time it was very hot they were allowed to go in without blazers).

Notice a few people are saying primary are saying PE kits but surely gingham school dresses or shorts and a polo shirt are just as cool as a PE kit? I never worried about hot weather with the DC were at primary because there were always sensible options. It's secondary that is the nuisance then 6th form they can wear what they like (and my eldest is finished anyway so is currently in the airconditioned Metrocentre).

Dc secondary school have the option to either wear relaxed uniform (no tie and top buttons undone) or pe kit. They're school have a sensible uniform policy though that already include tailored shorts and shirts, short sleeve shirts and jumpers they are allowed to remove.

Yeah. I suppose ot depends on whether you have school shorts. My primary DC is wearing polo shirt and school shorts and PE kit on usual PE days.

DD’s school is in summer uniform anyway which is summer dresses and shorts.

Justploddingonandon · 23/06/2026 16:42

Both DD's primary and DS's secondary have said they can come in PE kit or shorts and short sleeved shirt or summer dresses (in DD's case).

For those secondaries with school shorts as part of the uniform in summer do the kids wear them?
Ds school introduced them. All looked good, dutifully went out and bought them and now he won't wear them as "urghh noone wears shorts " despite most of them wearing shorts all year round in primary

My DD is allowed to wear shorts this half term anyway so is just going in in shorts and school shirt (which is a short sleeved polo shirt)

All seem to around here yes, girls and boys

attishoo · 23/06/2026 18:13

The local schools here usually allow the wearing of the school sports uniform

Asked DS, he doesn’t but he doesn’t wear shorts outside school either. He says some of the other boys do, but not many.

It’s pe kit this week though we just got told school is closing at 1pm tomorrow and Thursday!!

Justletmemoveon · 23/06/2026 20:18

Our secondary is closing tomorrow and Thursday but this week they’ve allowed summer uniform, PE kit or any combo of the two.

TurboGirl2 · 23/06/2026 20:55

Since last year my eldest daughters secondary let them wear pe kit the whole of the last half term. My youngest is at primary and they are wearing pe kit this week.

GHOSTTHINKER · 25/06/2026 14:06

DS school haven't really relaxed anything but both go in shorts anyway and I have not sent their jumpers or a jacket all week. Youngest DS taken a cap too (older DS won't mess his hair up bloody idiot) & smothered them both in suncream before school..... DSD (15) has been in PE kit all week total faff having to wash it every night... doubt everyone has done the same so no doubt school will be stinking 😷

OrlandointheWilderness · 25/06/2026 14:17
