If you have please tell me all about it! I desperately want to go on pointless.

I was on University Challenge in the Bamber Gascoigne days. I answered one starter towards the end, I got it right and got huge ironic cheers from the crowd, and Bamber made some cutting remark. Otherwise, I had remained completely silent. I was so embarrassed, I didn't tell anyone about the experience. My parents never knew that I was on the show. I have never told my sister either.

I was in the runner up team on my country’s rather low-rent equivalent. Our supporters in the audience queried a question we’d been told was wrong, got shirty, and the producer stopped filming and ticked us all off with threats of expulsion etc, Then we lost anyway, and went out and got so drunk two of us missed the coach home.

Yes, Mastermind back in 1990 - good old Magnus's day - came 2nd in the dress rehearsal, - two rounds of general knowledge questions from previous series - but 4th in the actual recorded version. I was allowed 5 guests to be in the audience and we were fed a sumptuous buffet after the recording and received the standard BBC appearance fee of £50, as it was at the time, and three black and white photos of us collectively, and individually, with Magnus. In those days all male contestants had to wear a collar, tie and jacket or suit. I recall the recording of my second round being halted so that the make up artist could come and apply powder to my face as I was sweating so much!

Also on an episode of 'Eggheads" in 2010, playing for £12,000, but, although we put up a very good performance we lost out - our final team took the eggheads to three 'sudden death' questions, but two were edited out, on transmission, to make the eggheads look better!

Yes as a teen, went with school, something hosted by Darren Day, he was really moody and ignored all the kids 🤣

Then at 18, a show by Davina Mccall- forgotten the name, they gave us all alcohol and we shouted lots, she was very lovely to everyone

I was on Finders Keepers if anyone remembers that as a kid. I won a PGL holiday.

I also had a hugely cringe online audition for Mastermind during lockdown (what was I thinking??) but the less said about that the better.

I’ve been on Pointless. We won the jackpot. It’s really a lot of fun and they look after you so well. Go for it.

Locientio · 19/06/2026 05:59

What do they look for to go on the live show on pointless?

We went for an audition at a nearby city hotel. There were loads of other pairs there. First I think we did a written general knowledge quiz. I suppose they want to make sure you have a reasonable level of general knowledge. Then we played a game of pointless. Lastly we were filmed talking a bit about ourselves. I’ve no idea why we were chosen. We watched the whole series we were on and only spotted one other pair from our audition day. We didn’t wait long to be told we were on. And then we filmed the show just a few weeks later. The production team sorted travel and hotels. I honestly enjoyed the whole experience so much. I would really recommend it. Plus winning the money was nice. My trophy has pride of place on my mantelpiece.

I applied to supermarket sweep, but never got on! I did sit in the audience of Trisha though and I was on the show (when they zoomed in on the audience) 😎

Ohhh..I was in the audience of the similar show with Sarah Kennedy.my friend was distracted by an old lady that had fallen asleep and was snoring..Sarah Kennedy said ."you're laughing, what do you think?" My friend looked like a rabbit caught in headlights as had no clue what the question was ( it was about surrogacy) so Sarah Kennedy turned to me .I just waffled on.i later reassured my friend that they'd cut that bit out..they didn't! 🤣

My DH was on Popmaster when it was still on Radio 2. He won and got the 3 in 10.

The (cheap and rather plasticky) digital radio has pride of place on a shelf in the living room.

I went on Popmaster in 2018 - Got a full house and made it to Champions League. Still got my Ken Bruce DAB radio and quiz book.

Quizzled · 23/06/2026 13:46

I was on the 1% Club. It’s so much easier watching at home, I found it much harder in person and ended up taking the 1K cash out. It was a really long day that was actually quite boring, it took around 8 hours to film the episode! No one was enjoying themselves.

twilightcafe · 23/06/2026 13:51

I was also a contestant on Popmaster TV. That was a hoot.

I had no expectations of winning (I was just glad not to get knocked out first), so my aim was to be a good contestant and enjoy myself.

Contestants are looked after from the minute you leave your house to getting back home. Travel to Glasgow, hotel and meals are covered.

We also had some counselling over the phone mainly don't assume you'll win and avoid looking yourself up on social media while your episode is on TV because people can be horrible.

I went on Catchphrase many years ago. They often reshow it on the repeat channels. Great fun.

Yes!! I won Singled Out. Went to Sticky Fingers and saw Rent.

Sticky Fingers with Julian Clary? I used to love that show, so silly but funny!

Sorry I’ve just realised I meant Sticky Moments!

No, but one of my exes was on OnlyConnect back in the early days. His team got quite far but didn't win. I can't remember much of what he said about it, apart from the fact that Victoria and the team were all very nice.

In my dreams I would get onto Pointless with my son, because he knows a lot about music, films and sport (as well as a lot of other stuff) and that would complement my knowledge (which is good in parts but extremely patchy). I doubt we'd get through the audition, though. Probably for the best. I imagine it's very nerve-wracking under the studio lights and time pressure so I'd probably make a complete fool of myself and be one of those people who get confused and forget a key bit of the question. 'Name a European capital city that contains the letter B'. 'Paris'. That kind of thing.

Yes, I'd love to go on Catchphrase because I'm really good at it at home, like I get most of the catchphrases most of the time, but I just know I'd clam up and choke and get everything wrong if I actually went on the show, and I'm just not willing to risk showing myself up on national TV, ha.
