Is this enough food for a lunchtime spread?

Hosting a family garden party in a month. There will be 9 adults, a 4 year old and two 3 year olds. Arriving at 11, staying at least a few hours. Plan is to just cover the kitchen table in food buffet style. 3 adults (including myself) are vegetarian. Plan is:

2 large quiches (one meat one veg)
Pasta salad with roasted veg + pesto
Potato salad
Sausage rolls
Lots of french bread and rolls
Range of cheeses
Range of sliced deli meats
Cooked chicken slices
Caprese salad
Crackers
Crisps and dips
Tomato, cucumber, pepper sticks etc.

Abundance of these ie the potato salad will be a big one, I am overweight and like a good portion so trust me when I say a large portion (anyone remember a similar recent thread? 😅)

Not sure on puddings yet, probably a fruit salad, biscuits and the birthday cake. Cake has not been planned so cannot give specific dimensions on size or volume of cake.

Is this enough? What else would you suggest?

I but I don’t see why a meal has to have hot food. Why?

i eat cold food winter and summer
and hot food summer and winter

but a meal is still a meal even if it’s cold
and the filling capability of a meal is not affected by it’s temperature
and lots of nice stuff is cold
and being served a cold lunch like
OP has laid on would be lovely

Because you're catering to different people with different palates.

OP is offering cold food so I would expect both to be offered to cater to all.

glitterpaperchain · 17/06/2026 20:03

Yes I don't really understand the obsession with hot food. Salads and sandwiches are perfectly normal things to eat. It's a buffet designed to be eaten outside standing up.

Indeed.

But you asked for opinions and mine is that I'd expect both to be offered.

backformoreofthesame · 17/06/2026 20:25

But the OP clearly stated that the type of food was what was considered normal for her guests and the question was how to estimate quantities

You are only offering side dishes to the veggies. You need a veggie equivalent to the chicken etc, that is not just quiche. Preferably not white carb based. It's all bread, pasta salad, potato salad.....

That would be the multiple cheeses

You think I need a veggie equivalent to sliced deli meats?

The cheese/veg/salad/dips?

I wouldn’t expect or necessarily even want hot food at this kind of event. I’m not sure how hot food would fit in really, it would be a bit out of place. It’s a really lovely garden-party style buffet. Someone said fishfingers?! 😂

I read the OP only and didn't read any other updates admittedly so my response was based only on that including consideration for children who are usually fussy like me

I would be totally happy with your buffet but if there is a need for more vegetarian protein (and I'm not sure there is if there is plenty of cheese especially the mozzarella in the Caprese) could you add some eggs, like Russian eggs? They'd go well with the potato salad or bread.

I didn't think of it as I personally find cold eggs disgusting. You couldn't pay me to eat a boiled egg or an egg salad. But other people like eggs probably! Also hummus will be one of the dips so there's a little protein

Our immediate family is roughly same numbers. Last time did two M&S quiche cut into 8. A platter of humous breadsticks guacamole and carrot pepper cucumber celery. Cheeseboard (3-4types and grapes, walnuts garnish. Sticky chicken legs, gammon joint to slice, chipolatas, hot potato wedges or potato salad, rice salad of some sort, green salad tomato salad. Basket of baguette slices. For pudding trifle or pavlova, chocolate mousse and a platter of fruit. Pintrest for ideas.

If other people like them this would be an easy way of having something proteiny. Or you could make something like a whipped feta dip with pine nuts on top.

TubeScreamer · 17/06/2026 21:26

I think it’s absolutely fine for a lunch.

bittertwisted · 17/06/2026 23:21

I don’t think I have ever seen the word quiche so many times 😂

I'd only eat the bread, cheese and crackers from here but appreciate I'm fussy.

Agree with pp there's a lack of hot food.

One thing that annoys me is when there's a lot of things made up with dressings and sauces etc already in them (did I mention I'm fussy?)
So for me, I love pasta, hot pasta, but it's got salad added in and other things.

The cheese and meats are all cold.

I do like a caprese salad but will you put a dressing on or just olive oil?

I wouldn't touch the potato salad because it will be mixed.

Could you add some hot foods? Pizzas are a good idea.

If there was more hot food that'd be ideal. In absence of that I'd look for some dishes where they are a bit plainer with the dressing separate. I appreciate most adults aren't as fussy as me but kids are.

Jacket potatoes?

Chips?

Fajita wraps so people can mix some of the dishes and make a wrap?

Fish fingers?

@ktopfwcv

yes, OP , what about FISH FINGERS?! why have you not thought about that? And if not, why not?! @glitterpaperchain

Why couldn't you use and apply all the very good information given on that thread?

A bunch of people coming round, mixture of adults and kids, some veggie, some not, 2 quiches and otherwise broadly identical offerings. Seems a virtually identical situation to me.
Please tell me what's significantly different about it? Or why you can't possibly apply a teensy bit of critical thinking to extrapolate one situation to another that is basically the same.

LemonadeisbetterCloudy · 18/06/2026 10:22

Great spread op. Agree with other pps, acouple of pizzas, and a garlic bread possibly/or minis.

Dessert options: I'd have some bite size things like mini brownie bites/rocky road/cookies, and also the cake you mentioned as a simple vanilla cake with butterceam and jam to appeal to more people).

You've made me hungry now!!

Hope you enjoy your lovely buffet op!

Add another quiche or similar. Then with all the sides should be great.
