I commented on an article about Trooping the Colour. A paper ran a rather unkind article about Kate Middleton looking rough. She didn't, it was an unflattering camera angle. There were some unpleasant comments amongst the mundane ones, dragging Meghan in when she wasn't there, and being rude about Camilla.

In response to one post (that wasn't horrible) I explained the difference between being born a princess (eg Anne) and having it as a title owing to marriage (eg Kate and Diana).

Someone wrote one word, sycophant.

I'm absolutely not and I'm not a royal fan, but I'm not against them either they're just there, just people. I'm not posting here to get into the rights and wrongs of the royal family or their titles etc, but about the weird comments. They clearly don't really know what sycophancy is.

A chap then wrote one word "triggered" and I said not to worry you'll soon get over it.

His reply was. . Oh arsehole you fat bint.

🤣🤣🤣

There's no photo of me that he could see to work out whether I'm fat or skinny! And arsehole? Is that an imperative? It makes no sense!

Seriously what do these people get out of this absolute tripe? What's the point of them following news stories to write one word and insults? It's bloody madness.

Another example though not rude is from a local history page. Someone posted asking if anyone remembers anything about a legendary sandwich bar from the 70s asking for any pictures, memories etc. Lots of comments saying yes they remember it but nothing useful.

Another person asked if anyone has any pictures of a house from the 1920s that's been merged with the house next door and is now a business. Nobody did, but someone replied:

The Robinsons lived there
Ooh I remember them
Oh hello Pauline fancy seeing you here!
Not seen you for years Norma how are you?
Not so good Pauline I had a fall last Friday
Oh that's a shame our Graham doesn't do much these days he's still at home you know

And on and on!

It defeated the object but was quite funny.

I read the local FB sites for local news but I've never commented on anything and never will. It's handy for traffic news and events that are coming up which I'd be unaware of.

I never fail to be unsurprised at how thick and stupid a lot of them are with their comments to some of the posts, also how many are quick to aim the Karen jibe at anyone female they disagree with including women using it at other women. 🙄

Precisely why I only browse the ads... Seeing ones for chester draws reassures me my time is best spent on mn!!

Oh yes, or giggle at the ridiculous prices people are asking for their old tat.

I once saw an ad for a "chabbyshic shaylon". I had to go to the photos to realise it was a shabby chic chaise longue!

People like this are everywhere - on every forum and every comments page.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Life would be dull without different opinions.

Specifically related to the OP - some people have little knowledge of the Royal Family and simply don't understand.

When these things happen, just remember, you can't fix stupid.

comments sections of news articles, particularly on the local press facebook pages are pitiful places.
They also highlight the genuinely alarming illiteracy rates in this country.

I was described from my profile picture on Facebook as obviously a woke lefty, the only thing that could support that description was that I was in a bookshop, just wearing a flowery dress it
Quite enlightening what shows someone to be a woke lefty, is to be pictured in a bookshop
I hadn't even said anything woke or lefty just put someone right on inaccurate info, so someone who visits bookshops and capita accurate info with evidence behind it rather than inaccurate far right crap

pouletvous · 16/06/2026 22:11

What are you doing commenting on these articles??!

Dont feed the trolls

Honestly don’t bother reading comments or responding.
So many people on Facebook are literally just keyboard warriors! Abusive men picking on women usually, knowing the woman can’t do much about it.. but it makes these men feel big and manly… I just chuckle and think to myself that they must have a micro penis! I don’t respond because I think they’ve probably got some poor women at home they’ll take the anger out on if a woman on Facebook dares argue with them!
I try now to only read the comments to articles if I think the comments will be funny…. But prefer to spend my time watching cute videos or researching my family tree.

This, in spades.

The intelligence of the average person has dropped like a stone in a couple of generations.

Most of them aren't people. Or if they are they are thick as fuck. This is how Reform are doing so well. Its embarrassing to watch how gullible people are.
