Going out to visit a friend soon...... is there anything brilliant I should get? Or is everything the same as the UK?

Chicken salt for chips 😋

You can buy lovely items made from banksia cones, though I'm not sure, being wood, they can be brought back into the UK.

Over the years I've brought back any number of banksia items, and jarrah wood bowls. Never occurred to me that I shouldn't 😲

The reason I mentioned it was because if the situation was reversed, with wooden items coming in, Border Security in Australia would require them to be declared, and might not allow them in.

Aboriginal art is a definite, also look at jewellery, I got some opal stuff and a ring with a gold nugget on it. I don't think it was cheaper but not something you see here.

I also got some really nice children's books if you have children to buy for.

Have a fab time, and if you are flying via Singapore, pack your bathers for the airport pool.

Fruchocs! They are south Australian not sure how widely available they are. Also if you are an iced coffee fan try Farmers Union iced coffee. It’s the best!

Sunscreen and dark chocolate Tim Tams, which are a hundred times better than Penguins!

This an outrageous thing to say penguins are far superior!

I live here and I don’t think there is much you can get here that you can’t get there. As a side note our local supermarket has just started selling m and s bits and warburtons crumpets which are far superior to the Aussie ones but at £2.50 a pack!

They might have been at one time, but no longer qualify as chocolate.
OTOH, Tim-Tams now contain palm oil too, so have fallen away from their former majesty, holding on to chocolate status by the skin of their teeth.

Disclaimer: I'm properly disinterested here as I don't like chocolate.

3flyingducksarrive · 13/06/2026 02:49

Fruchocs are a South Australia thing, you don't often see them in other states sadly.

Noosa chocolate is great. Whittakers chocolate is available in supermarkets and it is the GOAT. It's a Kiwi brand.

Oh and melatonin is prescription only and only one strength available.

carwashthecat · 13/06/2026 03:02

If you’re coming to Queensland and do want Melatonin, you can buy the 2mg tablets OTC, if you are over 55

Splat92 · 13/06/2026 03:39

Since a few people have mentioned Haigh's, it's good chocolate but I think Koko Black is even better (there a number of stores in Melbourne and Sydney) and also Josophan's (in Leura in the Blue Mountains).

its 20yrs since I was there so I can’t vouch for how nice the chocolate is now, but I bloody LOVED Cherry Ripes, Caramello and Caramello Koalas. Making my mouth water thinking about them!

20 years for me too. B&M sell Cherry Ripes now.

Chocyulelog · 13/06/2026 06:45

Chicken salt (all fries are coated over there) and, if you have a baby/toddler, Bonds zipped onesies

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 13/06/2026 07:06

I used to ask people going to Oz to pose me a pair of Blundstone Boots, but they are commonly available in the UK now.

I used to get Bond’s knickers in John Lewis. They were great. JL don’t carry them anymore, so I’d get them. I like a good knicker.

TerfOnATrain · 13/06/2026 07:25

The only thing I regularly use and found good value and worthy of bringing home was unbranded, real sheepskin slippers.

imip · 13/06/2026 08:38

Last time I went home, I brought a big block of Cadburys dairy milk chocolate. The. We had taste test games with the U.K. version (obv not with ‘chocolate’ in the name anymore). We did a few games like that. My dc are teens but still loved it. It’s been almost a year since I was last home and I still have the chicken salt. With the Tim tams (lots of limited edition flavors) we did Tim Tam slams.

imip · 13/06/2026 08:39

And you used to also be able to get the Bonds wonder suit on Ocado! Not anymore.

curious79 · 13/06/2026 08:40

If you know anyone with a new baby, Bond’s poodlet wonder suits. They’re gorgeous. Much more expensive here

Agree that Josophan’s is the best. The problem is though you have to go to Leura, which is where Kay if you have a car and make a stop before Katoomba (where everyone goes to see 3 sister’s, do sky car etc), but if not, it’s quite out of the way.

As for KoKo Black, it’s all personal. I know some people who love it, personally I’m not a fan at all.

3flyingducksarrive · 14/06/2026 03:23

I love Koko Black, not particularly thrilled by Haighs. I do not love the price of Koko Black.

Paparomeoumbrellaecho · 14/06/2026 03:40

Sanza.co.uk sells a lot of Australian snacks too

You can get dark chocolate and every other timtams in any UK supermarket, why would you drag them back from Australia?

There are loads of different flavour Tim Tams in Australia, including limited edition ones. I've only ever seen about 4 here. Also many different varieties of Cadbury blocks.

Kelvinator1 · 14/06/2026 09:46

Haighs chocolate, Darrell Lea flavoured licorice/chocolate, Peter Alexander pjs and Lorna Jane activewear

Forgot Darrell Lea, dh loves the bullets. And we bought PA pj's for dd, they had whippets in.pjs on. Bloody expensive, but were on sale.
