Would you apply for your boss’s job if it came up?

I 100% would not. Me and my peers would be a nightmare to manage, there are always really hard decisions to make because resources are so limited, people always want more than you can offer at all hours of the day (with no on call) and it’s very outward facing so would mean a lot of suits and my current role is mainly jeans and a jumper.

What about you? Why or why not?

No. I do think I could do my boss’s job, but at my point in life I am keen to reduce my hours not increase them. I don’t need the extra money either.

It is and no, I won’t be applying 🤣. I had a foray into management a few years ago and never again! Plus the pay rise wouldn’t be in any way worth it.

Are you my former boss who retired yesterday?! No I don’t want your job thanks, I’m much more a doer than a manager! And one of our team is a ‘challenge’ to manage…..

No I'm not, you can relax! I'm much more of a doer than a manager too, and didn't manage a team at this place, it was a self-contained role.

I was halfway through steering a project that is going to go tits up no matter what anybody does and no, they didn't ask me my opinion of their chosen accounting software before they signed on the dotted line. If they had, I could have told them they were making a monumental and insanely expensive mistake, and I eventually decided that life's too short for that shit.

Took early retirement instead. Deep joy.
