Radio breakfast show

Hi all, I’ve really tried to like Gary Davies on radio 2 since he took over from Scott Mills, but I just don’t. It’s so so boring and old fashioned feeling. Please can anyone recommend a radio breakfast show to listen to on my way to work? I can be in the car for up to an hour so really want something light and funny. Did listen to Chris Evan’s on virgin before Scott Mills, but all his health and running chat got annoying. I like a mixture of chat and pop music. Need to give something else a go, Can’t carry on with radio 2. Thanks everyone.

I feel bad for Gary Davies. Because he seems like a really nice guy and I doubt he'll ever turn out to be problematic. But I can't stand "deja woooooooo" (although I felt the same about Zoe Ball and "tellybox" and Vernon and "sunshiiiiiiiine" so may be being irrational) and I find it all a bit dull. My judgement may be clouded because I really miss Scott Mills. Recently the big deal about the bad sound effect for moving the jukebox. Spoils the whole jukebox segment. I liked that Scott Mills pretended "the quiz" was a real being!

I hope Greg James makes the move to Radio 2. I like him but I'm too old for the radio 1 playlist.

This is what I’m worried about with radio 1 - the playlist. I actually don’t mind Greg James though. I listened to magic on the way home tonight (usually listen to Sara Cox), just to see what it was like.

Yesterday’s show was very “ LEEDS LEEDS LEEDS!!!” it’s not normally as bad as that. Chris does chat about other stuff apart from football

Started with radio 1 this morning, but only lasted 10 minutes. I like Greg James, but the music was awful. Can’t be doing dance music or rap type stuff at 7am. I need something cheery I can sing along to. Turned out to Magic with Gok and Harriet and it was pretty good so might have found my new home. But I still think I will try a few others.

I actually really liked Scott Mills because he wasn't sycophantic, fawning over everyone with a "bless you" type attitude like Zoe. I enjoyed that he was a bit prickly sometimes, which suited me in the morning!

But I agree. I can't keep going with "oooooh Gary D," so I might give Nick Grimshaw a go because I hate adverts. On the drive home, I'm sorry, but I can't stand Sara Cox. Again, it's the saccharine aspect, so I catch up with Jeremy Vine instead. Maybe I'll use sounds to find something else from the day before or listen to the early breakfast show instead?

I really like Dave Berry on Absolute radio, they have lots of stations which play different music but it’s the same show iyswim? They have absolute 70’s, 80’s, 90’s ( my favourite), rock etc

A few people have mentioned Absolute, will give it a try.

Greg James on Radio 1 here too. You can hear just how much he loves being a morning show presenter and he's funny.
BTW I am 60 so way out of the demographic for R1but really enjoy his show.

Listen to a podcast or audiobook - that’s what I’ve started doing in the car.

I can’t get on with podcasts at all. Dh loves then, but I just feel like I’m being spoken at incessantly. It makes me what to yell ‘shut up’ at them 😂. I really like a mixture of lighthearted chat and pop tunes in the morning. I do a lot of talking (and being talked to) in my job so a bit light chat and happy music is what sets me up best.

what about your local radio station?

Do you know, I hadn’t actually thought about it, but it’s a good idea. Don’t really know why I hadn’t considered it. Grew up in Birmingham listening to BRMB. Anyone remember Les Ross? I’ve moved since so not in Brum anymore.

Me too. I'm 58 but still like listening to a lot of the new music on R1, but Greg is the only DJ I like, and hate it if he's away and there's a stand-in. I can listen to Matt and Molly, but anyone else, such as Dean McCullough, I turn over. In fact that's why I was listening to R2 when Gary Davies suddenly stepped in for Scott Mills a few weeks ago.

Popping in to add myself to the list of over 50 Greg James fans. Although I've never really grown out of Radio 1, I still like the music, I hop between that and radio 4 all day, I've never felt old enough for Radio 2.

I agree- I cant stand Gary Davies! He is so cringey- he reminds of that guy at the bar that makes yor skin crawl and you find yourself shuffling sideways away from. With Veron on holiday and Mark Goodier sitting in, Mark & Gary are totally like Smashy and Nicey!!
Hoping R2 sort their breakfast show very soon or I'm off back to Virgin

I'm just fed up of hearing men talk all the time on the radio. Wherever you turn your dial to it's primarily men - blah blah blah, look at me, I'm so funny, listen to me and my opinions, that's enough about me what do you think about me, blah blah.

Wow I didn’t see that coming! It’s a shame actually as I like her driving home show. Wonder who will do that slot now?

I am liking Gary Davis actually - when he does his take on the show and not Scotts old stuff. I cant stand the adds for the phone in money making stuff on certain other programs every 15 mins . - Radio 1 cant cope with the music

I think Sara Cox could be worth a try - it’s great to have a main female lead. I do agree with others that the ‘aw bless’ attitude to everything and everyone wears very thin very quickly (I couldn’t listen to Zoe) but Sara might realise and tone it down. She has a great personality and is clever as owt, she could do very well.

We’ve changed to Radio 1 instead.

Our morning school run isn’t too long and DC enjoy the more modern music. I couldn’t stand Gary. I tried. Have had to change over. At least I’m getting to learn some new music!

I thought it might be Sara, I can’t really see who else they would have chosen but I’m surprised she accepted the show. I though she’d been offered it in the past and refused but I could be wrong with that one.
