Boho shops

This is for 70s/80s MNers though also poss from 60s.

In Streatham there was a small boho shop selling ethnic wares and boho clothes, on Leigham Court Road, it had the painting of a woman with curly hair and sunflowers on the wall above it. Off the high street there was a small gift and card shop called Abraxus. In Battersea on roads coming off Northcote Road going up, say past Salcott Road there was another boho shop. In Gipsy Hill/West Norwood there was a little shop but part house (flat on top) that was boho ethnic. I used to love looking around these shops when I was younger. Guess the hippies have moved on.

But does anyone recall shops like these? Non commercial. Very counter culture. Smelling of incense, and maybe weed!

Come to Totnes in Devon. They still exist.

Pieceofpurplesky · 06/04/2026 13:34

This has been a favourite of mine since being a young teen and is still open. I always imagine it's a shop version of Stevie Nicks!!

To be fair there are a couple more like this in Chester and in the Welsh towns I have visited.

Step into Wonderland at Lee Louise Chester

Chester’s go to destination shop for crystals, spiritual, wellbeing & holistic gifts, jewellery, hair dye & stunning prom dresses. Step into Wonderland & find your magic at Lee Louise Chester

Brighton?

Brighton?

That’s nearer to me. Having said that I’ve got auntie in West Chinock and other relatives in Bath so that’s nearer Devon.

There's one in Hexham.

trainedopossum · 06/04/2026 16:28

At least three of these shops (or similar/adjacent) in Bridport, one actually burning incense all the time. If I walked down South St blindfolded I’d know when I was outside 😀

Not exactly the same but DH and I still have various hippie tchotchkes and Christmas baubles from Nice Irma’s in Goodge St. Every Christmas we get a little nostalgic about it.

I used to go there when I was a teenager in the early 80s. I used to get my cheese cloth tops, crinkle skirts , afghan coats and incense.
I think i was modelling myself on a combination of Grace Slick and Janice Joplin, both were from my mum's generations snd my mates were into two tone!
Penny Lane records , more or less opposite was fabulous 👌

Penny Lane was fantastic. Followed by lunch at the Great American Disatser!

Dilliway and Dilliway, Glastonbury springs to mind. Several other shops of a similar vibe in Glastonbury and Frome.

Arlanymor · 06/04/2026 17:22

Glastonbury and all of Wales! Come and visit us - croeso!

SuperMarioToadPrincessPeach · 06/04/2026 18:16

Oh I used to live in that area of London! Bringing back memories.

I love a good boho shop.

I love Dilliway & Dilliway, their furniture is amazing, but think there are other Glastonbury shops that more fit the bill. They need to be a bit more 1995 Camden market scuzzy IMO!

I 100% concur with this !
The whole high street smells of incense, it's glorious

Good Habit in Swansea was the best hippy shop. I got pretty much all my clothes there when I was a teenager and I've still got lots of tat from there! The carrier bags with a green elephant on them were iconic.

Grace Slick is an icon! Let’s not talk about Starship though…

Which area of London? My mum was a 70s hippy even though she denies that now!

Totally agree and I live here!

spiderlight · 24/04/2026 22:23

I'm Swansea born and bred and it's still home, although I've been in Cardiff for a few years now. I barely recognised the town centre the last time I was there. All 'my' shops have gone.

louderthan · 25/04/2026 21:52

Lots of shops like that in Brighton still.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 25/04/2026 22:40

There was a shop like this on Pontypridd, mid 90s when I lived there.

DominoQueen51 · 26/04/2026 08:18

@PieceofpurpleskyI remember Elouise. I grew up near Chester. That’s a blast from the past

lovealieinortwo · 26/04/2026 08:21

Off the high street there was a small gift and card shop called Abraxus.

I remember this shop! When did it close?
