Which hyped restaurants have you found underwhelming?

Went to happy restaurant london today and I just didn’t get the hype. It was okay as far as restaurants go, but I just found it a little underwhelming considering the hype it gets. DP, DS and my sister absolutely love it, they’ve been about 4 times, dd has been twice, she told me she prefers hard rock and tbh I have to agree with her.
what restaurant hypes did you find underwhelming?.

Wagamama is rubbish.
One of the DC love it and always pick when it's their turn. Very expensive and very average food.

I know it’s fast food rather than a traditional restaurant, but I thought Five Guys was a bit rubbish.

Loads of people I knew talked about how good it was but the only novelty for me was buying a beer with my overpriced burger.

And is the giant vat of peanuts in the middle of the restaurant a standard offering? You’d never catch me eating out of that, given the number of grubby hands that have probably been dipping in there- absolutely grim!

The Five Guys food was Ok when we took 3 young Gdcs yesterday right after seeing The Magic Faraway Tree (conveniently in the same building and we had to take them 60 miles home right afterwards) but we were a bit 😱 at the bill - just over £70 for 5 of us, just 3 standard burgers, one small one, a hot dog, one large fries to share, drinks for the kids only.

Once went to a Gordon Ramsey burger restaurant. It was in High St Kensington, not sure if it is still there. It looked dirty, and my husband left all of his burger, it was dripping stuff. Vile. Also that famous fish n chips shop in Whitby - The Magpie. My husband is very polite, never sends things back, just doesn’t eat the meal, but he sent the fish back, they weren’t happy. Trenchers is better. Underwhelmed by Rick Stein’s in Winchester.

Llamamaman · 30/03/2026 17:06

Didn’t like Roast much
Gloria in Shoreditch. Sure the see through toilet door is fun. But also weird. And the food was average

ExBert80 · 30/03/2026 17:06

And Tom Kerridge’s pub in Chelsea. Mediocre.

Llamamaman · 30/03/2026 17:08

Petrus - super fancy but totally unfriendly and food so average. It was actually a really awkward experience

DH took me to a Gordon Ramsey pub in Maida Vale years ago. I was appalled that they had already put salt on the chips. Loads of it. Maybe I’m odd, but I never put salt on my chips! I seem to remember them telling me all the chips were salted so I couldn’t swap them. I was furious!

I was a bit underwhelmed by the food in Gloria, but I’d go back and try something different because I absolutely loved the surroundings. I felt like I was in a 1970s US soap opera.

heston Blumental at the mandarin oriental Hyde park
£350

Edited

Oh yes here too. Had a really weird lunch there. It was full of literal international teenagers ordering on their parents’ cards and braying. Food not good enough to make up for horrible atmosphere and cost.

Yes looks fab. My memory is probably coloured by the fact I went with my ex husband!

I love The Magpie in Whitby, so much seafood choice, but must admit my two daughters and their families prefer Trenchers.

Wagamama. Everything tastes the same. I know it’s just a cheap and cheerful chain but I’ve been very underwhelmed whenever I’ve had the misfortune.

I can’t agree less! It’s freshly cooked, and the vegetarian options are very tasty. The prices are very reasonable too.

That’s disgraceful. I don’t have chips very often, but when I do, some black pepper and a bit of mayo is what I like to have with them.

CinnamonJellyBeans · 30/03/2026 17:26

Another one here, loving the Ivy chain. Great gin and tonic and I have always found the staff to be very friendly. Also the toilets smell great.

AgnesMcDoo · 30/03/2026 17:29

Koi Desert Bar in Sydney of Masterchef Reynolds fame.

the cakes looked out of this world - but had no flavour.

my mums home baking is nicer

MissyB1 · 30/03/2026 17:32

The Wallace cafe at the Wallace collection museum.Very overpriced supermarket type food, I’ve had far better in Waitrose cafe to be honest, my danish pastry was so horrible I couldn’t eat it.

Mowgli Street Food - I was so excited to go, I love Nisha Katona! Unfortunately, the food didn't live up to expectations and it was expensive 😕

I think it's gone downhill. I used to love getting the tiffin boxes, where you didn't know what you would get. They've now stopped doing them.

LatteLady · 30/03/2026 17:36

I went to Sketch about a month ago, just felt like a chain and the food was not that great. Enjoyed the original Ivy, but standards slipped when it became a chain. Never had a bad meal at the Savoy... from breakfast, to lunch, afternoon tea and dinner, with late night drinks in the American Bar.

Kiramman · 30/03/2026 12:31

Six by Nico. The food just isn’t that good.

And it goes on FOREVER. It could really be tapas.

archieshepp · 30/03/2026 18:20

I like the Ivys - easy, not too expensive and know what you're getting.

Anywhere in the Big Mamma group is hugely overrated. The Food is awful, when I last went they refunded the entire food bill because it was literally inedible. That said, they were lovely and it looked great in photos ;)

LeapyearLoser · 30/03/2026 18:22

Betty's Harrogate, queued for ages treated like cattle class! Seated downstairs no natural light at all, chicken sandwiches gave me food poisoning.

VerbenaGirl · 30/03/2026 18:29

Ottolenghi was sadly disappointing.

That was stand out the best by meal of my entire life

elliejjtiny · 30/03/2026 18:32

Miller and carter. Dh's family rave about it, said we MUST go. Not at those prices I said. Mil assumed this was my decision, said I was depriving dh of some enormous treat. In the end in-laws said they would take us and pay. Dh wasn't impressed, said he'd had better meals at the harvester. I thought it was nice enough but no better than the cafe at our local garden centre which is a lot cheaper.

The Ivy Glasgow has the worst service. The Ivy near Seven Dials had abysmal food.

Hakkasan, it was not worth the money. Pitch black, so pretentious and my seat was weird to sit on.

Michael Farlie at Gleneagles. So many courses and it took so long to explain each one I was no longer hungry or that interested by the time we had finished.

Lots of London places that do brunch or similar, overpriced and with stuff just piled high on plates. Apple butter cafe, pancakes swimming in sauce and the staff were so cold and unfriendly.

Hawksmoor Edinburgh, daylight robbery for drinks and I do a better Sunday roast.

Ka Pao Glasgow, totally rammed, couldn’t hear DP across the table. Food came to us quicker than it does at McDonald’s. So dinner date out, over in about 45 minutes and £150 out of pocket. Felt like we had been rinsed.

Totally agree re Hakassan not good.?
