Everything at 1.5 x speed

SoSadSoSadSoSad · 27/03/2026 20:43

Does anyone else listen to podcasts / radio catch and TV at 1.5 x speed or more?

I can’t bear to watch at normal speed anymore. Will only watch on Netflix because it has that option. Disney+ doesn’t.

It all seems so slow and laborious at normal speed.

Why on earth would you do that, are you in a rush?!

Yes. I listen to quite a few podcasts, I wouldn’t get through them at regular speed!
Some news/politics ones, The Rest is History, The Book Club, couple of Radio 4 ones. I can perfectly easily take in the information at a faster speed. 1.5x isn’t that fast.
I used to listen to The Archers, which I never listened to at 1.5x speed because I think it does make a difference with drama.

I wish you could do this for Teams meetings.

You can - skip the meeting, have someone record it in your absence and then play it back at 1.5x or 2x speed later. I do it quite regularly for general company meetings and training sessions for example.

Neves7 · 27/03/2026 22:01

I listen to audio books at 1.25 usually sometimes 1.5 depending on the narrator. I find usually more than 1.25 and the sounding like chipmunks thing is too distracting.

Can't really skip the ones you've organised though 😄

Not so much in a rush but it’s just too slow on telly. It’s like they’re talking for children or something.

It feels more natural at 1.5 speed.

Also listen to audiobooks at least 1.5x. Normal 1.0 speed sounds so slow… no/one in real life sounds like that or…..speaks….so….so…..slooooooowly…..

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 27/03/2026 22:12

I think you need to as everything has been dumbed down as they assume ppl playing on phones at same time

SauvignonBlancLady · 27/03/2026 22:13

Congrats, you probably have adhd ❤️

Onemanwenttomo · 27/03/2026 22:23

Podcast and audio books work well for me at 1.5x to 2x speed. I'm usually cooking or cleaning so have just enough mental capacity for this. I think with ear phones for the sound I could go faster if I was actively listening to the content.

I wouldn't do it with visual content as it would be too much if they were moving about unusually fast.

OtherS · 27/03/2026 22:27

Podcasts at 1.8x, though I'm sure presenters speak stupidly slow as they know people are going to do this. If I accidently catch them at 1x speed they all sound really stoned and sleepy. Am diagnosed ADHD though, and apparently talk extremely fast myself 🤔 Can't really focus on TV so don't watch it much - maybe I need to see if speeding it up helps.

Do you find it has affected your tolerance of the speed people speak in real life?

Not at all. I find people speak quicker in rl than in dramas on the TV.

That's interesting, I see what you mean now I think about it

GarlicFound · 28/03/2026 02:13

I have the cheap Netflix now. It doesn't have those settings. I used to speed up some films that were ponderous, with a lot of staring meaningfully across the valley and leisurely talk with long spaces. Most of what I watch is action, though, and I can't follow it any faster!

As it is, I tend to use the 10-second buttons to skate through slow or predictable sequences, or to go back over fast action if I feel I missed something. Wish real life had 10-second buttons 😂 Also wish it had subtitles! I don't listen to podcasts or audio books because I find it tiring.

Don't have ADHD

I never speed up anything I am watching for entertainment but I find practically everyone talks too slow so anything that can be, will be speed read.

hedgebets2 · 28/03/2026 02:53

I read really fast so slow irritates me
the only Instagram person I don’t speed up is homewithroo as she talks at a perfect speed for me Grin

IfyouStealMySunshine · 28/03/2026 06:37

Yes @hedgebets2home with Roo is a perfect speed!

I don’t speed up tv but yes always podcasts and recorded meetings

TheChosenTwo · 28/03/2026 06:39

I have my podcast speed set at 1.8 and watch YouTube on 2x speed.
i watch Netflix on the telly at normal speed because there doesn’t seem to be the option there to speed it up but on the app on my phone it allows me to watch at 1.5 I think so I do!

Of course not, it’s just the go to response on Mumsnet!

MaryBeardsShoes · 28/03/2026 06:41

I sometimes go up to 1.25 or 1.5 depending on the person talking. My husband listens to everything at 2x and I can barely understand (maybe if it was a topic I was familiar with it would be easier).

AmIReallyTheGrownup · 28/03/2026 06:43

All work training and CPD seminars get watched at 1.5x speed. It is amazing how slowly some men speak. I’m always bitterly disappointed when they use (I think) Webex that doesn’t let you speed up replays.

Occasionally I’ll watch YouTube sped up if I’m trying to learn something & I tend to listen to certain podcasts and audio books at 1.2x speed. TV is watched at normal speed!

ProudAmberTurtle · 28/03/2026 06:44

There's nothing wrong with ADHD but I wonder what percentage of people who do this have ADHD. It's worth researching IMO

AOBMGB · 28/03/2026 06:46

I do this but it’s a habit I’m trying to stop. I feel it’s really affected my attention span and I can’t concentrate for long periods of time without wanting to get into the next thing.
