If you tip your hairdresser...

...do you tip their junior/whoever washes your hair if not the hairdresser, as well?

I always tip my hairdresser a fiver but I'm never sure what to do if someone else has washed my hair. Tipping £2.50 feels vaguely insulting (not necessarily a junior, at the salon I currently go to) but I can't afford to raise my tips. How do other people get around this?

I’m paying 70£ for a hair cut now I’m not tipping on top of that ! They should be paying their staff properly if they making that per customer per hour

Edited

That's how I feel. I used to tip but when a standard cut and blow dry is £80 - I can't tip on top of that. But i do usually leave a bit of money if a junior washes my hair.

When I went to the salon I only ever tipped the hairwasher. Since having a mobile hairdresser I don't tip at all. She's the business owner so can raise her price. I do give a 'tip' at Christmas though.

TheRuffleandthePearl · 27/03/2026 14:56

I never tip as my hairdresser owns her own salon, says herself she sets her prices to be fair but make good money, and has a much nicer house and car than I do. I need it more than she does! 😄

I do give her a token gift at Christmas, I know she likes a certain type of drink.

I ended up rounding up the bill to the nearest sensible total and said for my hairdresser to split it with her employee (who helped with putting the colour on). They both hugged me so I'm guessing that was acceptable. 😄

Say I get a £50 hair cut, I’ll give the stylist £5 and tte washer £2. £1 is probably more like it proportion-wise but seems mean. So 10% to stylist and a couple quid to washer.

I don’t tip. My hairdressers is Russell Eaton in Barnsley. They don’t ’undercharge’ if you get me, I already pay for their in-depth expertise. They’re not on minimum wage like waiting staff so no, I don’t tip!

RosesAndHellebores · 27/03/2026 17:01

I've had two hairdressers in 40 years. Both with salons (independent). Neither has had a junior.

I have a cut, colour and blow dry every six/seven weeks. It's £180 and that's a good price for SW London. I always leave a tenner.

Dons flak jacket and runs.

I would far rather tip the junior than the hairdresser.

Yeah, same.

corblimeyguvnr · 27/03/2026 17:04

Currently they have quite a lot of new juniors at the salon I go to and I don't feel they are up to the standard yet ( possibly down to lack of training but they used to be very good at training ) so I don't tip them. I do tip my colourist and stylist.

No flak here - if I was having to shell out that much to have my hair done, I wouldn't be able to afford to tip!

My hair dresser went on a cruise and 5 holidays last year- think she gets enough!

Isthisit2025 · 27/03/2026 17:53

Tipping hairdressers is ridiculous now. Gone are the days they worked for tuppence h’apenny. The junior yes the hairdresser a big fat no!

corblimeyguvnr · 28/03/2026 11:44

I've always known who to try to keep on my side as it were throughout life and your hairdresser is definitely one of them.

CatrionaBalfour · 27/03/2026 12:23

That's what I think - I pay £85 for a cut.

I pay £112 for a half head of highlights and they charge £70 for a cut, it soon adds up, I do tip.............sometimes

I don't tip the hairdresser. They set the prices, I pay them. That's it.

I agree.
