How do you wash your car?

I used to handwash it when living in a house. But now I live in a flat it is too much hassle. So i go to the nearest petrol station and pay for the second-cheapest option once a month / every second month depending on the season. Does an acceptable job apart from the wing mirrors. But it annoys me having to pay 15 quid for it, when it used to be free.

The guy before me today sprayed his car before taking through. It looked like some kind of cleaning solution spray. What would that be about?

DH does it with the pressure washer. He has a whole kit of supplies including some sort of cleaning foam and wax to polish it up after. I don't really care if my car is washed or not but it seems to make him happy so I let him get on with it.

DrCoconut · 15/03/2026 16:30

The rain does it 🤣

Local car wash £6. Once or twice a year.

I go to a hand car wash. My garage told me the auto car washes are pretty harsh on paintwork. I’ve never really bothered to research if this is true.

CDTC · 15/03/2026 16:36

I've started using the jet wash at the local garage. It's about £4 to do it all.

My son loves a trip through the car wash with the multi coloured foam. So that's how i wash my car

£6? Where do you live? 1992?

RedRosie · 15/03/2026 16:39

I hand mine over to DH, and it comes back clean. 😁

I hose it down first, then use a bucket and car shampoo. Then hose it down again and then chamois wipe. It doesn't take long on a nice day. I probably clean it every 2 months. No man required!!

Maddy70 · 15/03/2026 16:57

Always a car wash. But where I live it's illegal to wash your car in a street so everyone uses car washes :)

MouldyCandy · 15/03/2026 16:59

Jet wash at local petrol station. £4.

WhatWouldDianeLockhartDo · 15/03/2026 17:00

Some petrol stations have a jet wash that you can wash it yourself with. Takes a little over 5 mins… I know because I always have to pay twice even though I’m almost done. It’s like £2 and looks really good after. It’s £25 for in and out at the best local cleaning place and once I had to pull out a second note, I refused to pay it.

KimTheresPeopleThatAreDying · 15/03/2026 17:02

You can wash cars? 😂

AgnesMcDoo · 15/03/2026 17:04

I pay my kids £5’to do it

TheLeadbetterLife · 15/03/2026 17:05

Once a year I pay 20€ or thereabouts for a thorough valet, because where I live you can fail the MOT if the car is filthy.

The rest of the year it’s a hovel.

This is why you have kids. I wish my nephews lived nearby.

I actually don't care what the outside of my car looks like but 2-3 times a year I take it to the hand car wash and they do inside ( I do care!) and out for £25 which I think is good value

HopSpringsEternal · 15/03/2026 17:07

About every 3 years when I have to give someone from work a lift. I never bother otherwise.

Iheartmysmart · 15/03/2026 17:07

I also live in a flat but my car is tiny and only takes a couple of buckets of water so it’s not really a problem. I’d be too scared to take it through a car wash as it’s ancient and may well fall apart.

All the car wash places round by me seem to do a roaring trade.

SpottyAlpaca · 15/03/2026 17:07

I don’t.

The illegal immigrants do.

SirChenjins · 15/03/2026 17:11

I wait till it rains. I use a wipe on the reg plate if it gets covered with dirt.

Talkingtomyhouseplants · 15/03/2026 17:11

I pay the lovely chaps who are clearly laundering money £19 to do it inside and out

Pascha · 15/03/2026 17:11

I have teenage boys so a tenner each once a month and they do all the hard work.

MMAMPWGHAP · 15/03/2026 17:13

I take it to the Car Wash at Sainsbury’s. Pay £3.50 or perhaps the £6 one. Have also had the more expensive £10 one which I don’t think is worth the extra. I clean off the detailed bits if necessary whe. I get home.

Those auto car washes aren't checked and cleaned, so you're getting other cars' worth of dirt and grit slathered onto your car as it passes through. Paintwork, glass and light lenses will get scratched up.

For something like washing your car, it's a lot better if you do it yourself. That way if you do scratch it, it's your fault.
