DH penis odour

Over the past few months I’ve noticed DH’s pre-cum has quite a strong odour. Once he’s ejaculated it smells more normal, it really seems to be the pre-cum that’s so strong-smelling. I don’t at all suspect he’s been cheating (I also recently had my coil replaced and was swabbed for everything), so what could it be?

We generally have excellent communication but I’m quite afraid of embarrassing him and haven’t brought it up yet. Any suggestions or help appreciated.

Its not something you have the ability to change so you are going to have to either talk to him or put up with it.
You could Google reasons that could happen then have a chat with him.

If you are married and have great communication with him I’d bring it up with him.

Has his diet changed?
Is he dehydrated?

You could ask him if he has noticed that it smells differently? He probably has but men tend not to like going to the doctors (especially for something embarrassing I imagine)

Yes I’d be surprised if he didn’t notice it. I’m struggling with bringing it up though, I think he must be embarrassed.

What does it smell similar to? Could it be something in his diet? If it's putting you off that much, you'll just have to speak to him about it.

Have you hit peri? Or could you be pregnant? Both can make yojr sense of smell suddenly much more sensitive

It’s a strong odour, slightly fishy? No big changes to diet I’m aware of. I suppose he has been eating more egg salad, could that be it? Not massive quantities or anything!

I am definitely very possibly hitting peri, I’m 45. Definitely not pregnant, just had my Mirena replaced. Perhaps it’s the peri that’s making me feel anxious about talking to him? I just feel like he’ll be embarrassed. (He’s not easily embarrassed at all, but not keen on criticisms of his body, though this isn’t a judgmental one…

There can be quite a few reasons for a change in smell including diet, hydration and medications taken.
In menopause our sense of smell can become more acute (I remember being aware of my urine smelling much stronger). The vaginal biome can change, and when mixed with semen the smell can become stronger. Women can actually become more prone to infection like bacterial vaginosis due to changing estrogen levels which might be passed onto a partner.
Would suggest discussing this with him, maybe with a view to both getting checked out for any causes. If in the UK, you could try a sexual health clinic who are well placed to do these tests.

I'm just throwing this out there, I had a UTI recently and honestly the pong from my wee was quite fishy smelling before the treatment worked. I know it's not wee you are referring to, but it comes from the same place! Might be worth checking out.

Thank you both for the suggestions, I’m absolutely knackered so will try take it up with him tomorrow. I didn’t realise the sense of smell grew stronger with the menopause, I’m certainly in peri but hadn’t considered that as a symptom. Although I can’t believe his semen has always smelled like this?!

I’m afraid it sounds like smegma, he needs to deep clean his peen.

Any cottage cheese going on?

I’ve had to tell dh about an odour down there once, first time I noticed it was when I about to give oral, I tried to be subtle but he knew something must be wrong because I practically gave myself whiplash moving my head away 🤦🏼‍♀️ I just told him I’d noticed a bit of a mild fishy odour and maybe he just needs another shower, when he pushed me to describe the type of smell I’d said its like he’d wiped a single scampi and lemon nik nak on his bellend.

If he's uncircumsized it might be some thrush discharge. Or, as a PP suggested, a UTI. Are you able to ask him if he's been peeing more frequently and/or urgently recently, any aching in his penis or pelvis? If he's not one for worrying the GP, he might be suffering in silence and hoping it will just go away.

I’ve noticed this on a couple of exes. I don’t know what causes it. STD tests (my exes and for me) were always negative so in my mind I just put it down to a body chemistry issue. But most men don’t have this odour so it is curious to me.

I really don't suspect an STI, as I've recently had a coil fitted and all my swabs were negative. Also I don't have any symptoms. And he hasn't mentioned anything about discomfort and there doesn't seem to be any other sorts of discharge. We've been together for over 15 years and he hasn't had this before, maybe it is also something with age?

I haven't really examined his penis, after a bit of googling and discussion here it does sound more like smegma, perhaps I should suggest we shower together before we are intimate?

Sense of smell goes wild in peri for some tbh.
DH had to stop using the shower gel he’d used for years because it suddenly made him smell (to me) like a wet dog after a muddy walk 😂

When my DH has had this I’ve just casually said can you give it a good wash as it’s a bit whiffy?

When my partner eats prawns, his ejaculate smells incredibly strong, so it could be a reaction with food consumption.

Tell him to go and rewash? Honestly you can’t put up with that and I won’t blame peri as I think it’s more likely he just isn’t washing well enough?

Thank you all, yes I'm going to discuss it with him this evening. It is putting me off sex and I think ignoring it might add to the embarrassment.

Does he have a penis beaker? If so drop a bit of Zoflora in that and see if that helps.
