I'm actually scare, conflict in the middle east

I'm actually scared. Reading the news and seeing all kinds of scare mongering in the media about four minute warnings etc articles in the mirror about the safest place to live in the UK in case of attack. I already have debilitating anxiety and OCD and I'm in a state of panic. Realistically. What is the chances that there will be a full blown war and the UK a target?

You're scared?? I live in Cyprus, and a drone landed in akrotiri (which is half an hour away from me). I'm shitting myself!

I'm so sorry. In the grand scheme of things I probable have no right to be scared.

Don't believe a word you read in the Mirror. Total gutter journalism, printing the scariest headlines possible to get more engagement.
Odds of the UK being a target are infinitesimal. Obviously what's going on around the world is horrible, and I don't want to sound flippant or minimise the suffering of others, but we are very safe here.

That's reassuring. I think the latest development of starmer allowing UK bases to be used by the US drags the UK into it somewhat.

I don't blame you, I would be too. Focus on the fact you're half an hour away & not at an airport! Stay out of tourist & government places if you can & hope this bit ends soon 🤗

@LittleRed34 I don't think we currently need to worry, individually we can't do anything to change what will happen, so try to just take each day as it comes. It's finally a nice day here, so shortly I'm off to the garden centre to get a card & present for a friends birthday & have a coffee. I have a lot of stuff I could spend the day worrying about & a lot of stuff that needs doing, but for today I'm just going to ignore it & go & enjoy the nicer weather, it's not warm here. But it's bright instead of grey & wet!

thd war situation isn't getting any more if my day until I check in again tonight. Can you do the same??

Turn off the news first a start.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 02/03/2026 11:11

I normally avoid the news but it's become hard to ignore lately.

The way you’ll get impacted will be if oil prices rise significantly due to the issues with Hormuz. The UK now being involved will increase our terrorism risk but that was no doubt inevitable anyway. As long as you have no intentions of visiting the ME and surrounding areas you should be fine.

SerenityScout · 02/03/2026 11:19

Yeah, I'm scared too. The whole condition is getting worse day by day.

Alpacajigsaw · 02/03/2026 11:22

I’m old enough to remember when conflict in the Middle East was constantly on the news for years. The only difference now is constant rolling news coverage.

Alpacajigsaw · 02/03/2026 11:24

And also frequent IRA bombs in our towns and cities

And the cold war

Nowt new to see here.

rainbowunicorn · 02/03/2026 11:28

Stop reading shite from dodgy media sources for a start. Then stop posting about it on here. This is how scaremongering starts. People reading nonsense and then repeating it.
There has been various wars going on for decades in various areas of the world. Some we get involved in, others we dont. This really isnt anything different. I am in my 50s and this honestly isnt something that I am worrying about on a personal level.
What exactly do you thinking going to happen and how do you think it will affect you?

Nuclear war? Missiles? Actual war?

This. I feel that a lot of the posters who are panicking and scared must be very young. Anyone over 35/40 will have been old enough to have been very much aware during the previous conflicts in the ME.

Karmaisaguyonthechiefs · 02/03/2026 11:34

don’t forget there is be loads of scaremongering and misogyny being posted all over the internet by Bots trying to use fear to destabilise ordinary people. Take any comments you see on social media and even places like mumsnet with caution.

Alpacajigsaw · 02/03/2026 11:35

LittleRed34 · 02/03/2026 11:31

Nuclear war? Missiles? Actual war?

Yes.

All of these threats have been here before

rainbowunicorn · 02/03/2026 11:36

LittleRed34 · 02/03/2026 11:31

Nuclear war? Missiles? Actual war?

You are just scaremongering. You do realise that we have been involved in may wars over the last 3 decades. None of them really impacted the average person in the UK. Just as this one isnt going to. Other than the price of oil and terror level increasing but thats not unusual. It goes up and down all the time.
As I said, if The Mirror is your source of news then it is all just scaremongering shite.

stackhead · 02/03/2026 11:36

LittleRed34 · 02/03/2026 11:31

Nuclear war? Missiles? Actual war?

Take yourself off the crappy media and read some history books. Yes there has been missiles and actual war, pretty much constantly forever.

There was also a massive threat of nuclear war, ever heard of the cold war? Cuban missile crisis?

If the UK gets hit then it gets bad, very very quickly. NATO would be obliged to respond, we'd probably pull in the Commonwealth. Therefore no country is going to send missiles to the UK lightly.

Chill.

Exactly

The UK has nukes and is in NATO

I'm actually scare, conflict in the middle east
FourChimneys · 02/03/2026 11:50

I am old enough that my teenage years were overshadowed by the threat of nuclear annihilation at almost any moment. We used to discuss the four minute warning at school.

Since then I have been deeply concerned for people caught up in conflicts but generally have a "what will be, will be" attitude.

I suspect we are at more risk of cyber warfare or localised terrorist attacks than nuclear bombs this time around.

Notmyreality · 02/03/2026 11:52

Do yourself a favour and stop reading the mirror for start.

Starlight1979 · 02/03/2026 11:53

There was a thread on here the other day / week which was titled "what do you do to make your life more peaceful" and someone had posted "don't watch the news".

I agree with this wholeheartedly.
