Have you ever… washed your onions?

I was today years old when I caught a glimpse of the tag on a 3 pack of onions that said ‘wash before use’. This has never ever occurred to me in my entire lifetime and honestly, what on earth! You peel ‘em, you chop ‘em! Am I the only one? 😂

Miltons isnt a bleach.
but it is meant to be good for washing vegetables

Milton sterilising fluid is a form of diluted bleach, containing 2 percent sodium hypochlorite
From the NHS.

Milton fluid definitely contains bleach.

It may be good for washing vegetables but vegetables particularly ones that are peeled do not need washing in the first place.

gototogo · 01/03/2026 08:51

No, lax on this more generally to be honest

gototogo · 01/03/2026 08:52

@EleanorReally Milton definitely is bleach, smell it!

EleanorReally · 01/03/2026 09:54

i used it for baby's bottles - obviously rinsed afterwards.
you wouldnt do that with bleach
although it did ruin many of our clothes

a relative abroad used it for vegetables.

The post before mine literally said to use MILTONS.

Which is a bleach.

that post was mine. Miltons is not bleach!

You're not meant to rinse it, but I always rinsed the bottles before using them. Same as I do with cups I use it on. Our tap water is safe to drink, so no harm rinsing them. I wouldn't in some other countries though.

Again, from the NHS:
Milton sterilising fluid is a form of diluted bleach, containing 2 percent sodium hypochlorite

From Wikipedia:
Sodium hypochlorite is an alkaline inorganic chemical compound with the formula NaOCl (also written as NaClO). It is commonly known in a dilute aqueous solution as bleach

Watchingthechaseagain · 01/03/2026 21:50

I cut the skin off the rinse, always have.

Peel veg or wash.....

It literally is bleach. It doesn't kill germs through the medium of dance.

stop being so daft.

It's a sterilising formula.

one of its uses is washing vegetables & fruit.

you're hilarious - not.

Both bleach & miltons have sodium hypochlorite in them. Bleach has a stronger concentration in it. Bleach also contains colouring & fragrance which Milton's does not.

Why is it always the people who are wrong who are the loudest? You're out here saying this with your whole chest and a 2 minute research into this would literally prove you wrong but, nope. Wallowing in your own ignorance it is.

A bit like
”Yes, we have no bananas” 😁

I recently read that grapes are one of the most sprayed with chemicals, insecticides, fungicides etc, of any fruit. Made me think about how they’re commonly taken by people to patients in hospitals still in the bag they were bought in so hardly likely to have been washed.

What do you (incorrectly) believe is wrong with that post exactly??

No shouting from me🤣
tuck your own chest back in!!

Sodium hypochlorite being the active component in bleach makes Milton Fluid a bleach.

It is also why when you soak fabrics in it, it bleaches out stains. It is the reason why people buy it.

It's also why the hazard instructions warn you against ingestion. Due to the fact it is a bleach.
