Would you eat a cake with a (real) spider on it?

I bought a cake from my local bakery. I just decanted it to have with a cuppa and a spider crawled out from the paper bag. The spider was a big fat one - the body was probably 20p sized and a kind of grey/black colour. The cake is a chocolate brownie (quite gooey). I couldn't see if the spider had any chocolate on its legs because it scuttled away, but my question is...should I eat the cake or bin it? (If it was a big fat fly I would probably bin).
I've done a poll if you might kindly answer. I hope I have provided enough information here for an informed choice. (Also my tea is getting cold).

I also thought you meant like a dead tarantula cake topper 🤣
As the spider ran off, I'd still eat the cake.
ETA I'd be more worried about the free spider roaming around the house 🤣

Edited

I was also imagining a tarantula topper 😂

I would have eaten it too OP, any mini spider eggs/poo will safely be destroyed by the acid in your stomach 😉

I think all you need to worry about is how much chocolate he got away with 😂 but having a spider phobia myself I can understand your predicament.

Australian here. I would trim the edges and eat it.

Your spiders would leave footprints…

I would eat it, without even a second thought!

Supposing it had laid it's eggs or pooed on the top!

I’d slice the top off too, thin shave all the way round

Nope not for me thank you, my imagination would tell me that she’s laid all her spider eggs on my brownie and I’m about to eat them 😂

Exactly what I was going to say! And then the first hint of wind I'd be convinced it was all the baby spiders hatching in my stomach 😂

ThatFairy · 23/02/2026 13:38

Oh my god No ! Everything in the world that's touched something will leave some stray molecules. So you'd be eating spider fragments with your cake !

Ha, thank you all. I was really torn between 'why not' and 'no thanks'. I couldn't articulate why I thought no thanks, apart from 'yikes'. I didn't even think of eggs or bakery hygiene. Good points!

Anyway, I checked the poll and it was marginally in favour of eat, so I did, but I just checked again and it's swung to a big fat bin it, so now I feel like the old woman who swallowed a fly but didnt know why....

This is when you need the laughing emoji back🤣

Was going to suggest putting back in the oven to 'sterilize' it but see I'm too late!
I personally couldn't have eaten it for purely psychological reasons, having worked in a large bakery complaints department in my youth some of the things returned that people had found in their bread would make you all 🤢🤮 I'm sure we've all eaten something that an insect or worse has touched at some point🤷 glad you didn't let your tea go cold🫖

BURN IT 😱

To be fair, any number of spiders could be doing that on any baked good in any bakery anywhere.

Not to be dramatic but I think you may have just ruined my life

AldiLidlDeeDee · 23/02/2026 13:47

It will be fine. 😋

Anyone who’s a mega fan of Still Game will probably be thinking of Peggy’s chocolate Spider cake with a dead tarantula baked on top of it. 🤣🤣

I thought you meant the spider was still on it! Like a disturbing decoration.

If it's now spider-free, I would not waste a cake.

Same!

if the question is “would you eat a cake that a spider has walked on?” My answer is “Yes”! But not until the spider has vacated the cake.

champagnetrial · 23/02/2026 16:56

You guys have made me lol. I haven't eaten anything since the brownie. Just hoping the acid in my stomach is doing its job and I don't birth baby spiders 😂
