Terrified - found breast lump

Tulipvase8 · 20/02/2026 18:09

Hi
I went to the GP this afternoon as I’d noticed my breast had grown in size. I couldn’t feel a lump but I went due to the change in size. I presumed the gp was going to say it was hormonal.
Unfortunately she found a 5cm lump. It was moveable, firm and sore (although I don’t know if it’s just sore due to the prodding).
I am besides myself with worry. She told me “if I was really concerned I would tell you and I’m not overly worried” but she has referred me to the breast clinic under “urgent”. She did also say “the clinic might even ask why you have been referred but as your Gp I just want to be on the safe side”.
I have two little boys and I feel sick to the stomach with worry. I’m terrified that if it’s something bad, now that it’s 5cm it’s going to be too late. Please help me.
I cant stop crying.

This happened to me and I had to have the lump removed. It turned out to be a benign phyllodes tumour with no further treatment. Wishing you all the very best for your op.

Thank you so much for letting me know that , since the first notification of the lump it’s feels like it’s been over a month , it’s felt so long , tonight will deffo be a sleepless night but just want to get it out the way now , and thinking of being back home hopefully tomorrow eve is keeping me going 🩷

Hi. It sounds like a cyst. I have had breast cancer and mine was never sore.

I know it’s so hard. This time tomorrow it will all be over and that pesky lump will be out. I got my results about a week any a half after t the op and I won’t lie it was very stressful. A B3 was explained to me that it wasn’t cancer but they weren’t too sure what it was so better to have it out than leave it in. If you can please let us know how things went. Also the scar is nothing to be worried about. Mine has flattened and I barely notice it.

Paraguay · 22/02/2026 19:23

Ooh. Cyst. I have had lots
they might aspirate it. If they do, ask them how much it is
one of mine was a shot glass fgs

Hiptothisjive · 22/02/2026 19:24

Als and apologies if it’s been mentioned - the two week cancer pathway is very very very normal and doesn’t mean you have cancer. They out you on this to have it tested and not have you wait.

Take a breath OP. Ive been there (and worse). It’s most likely to be a cyst and crying and worrying is only going to upset you more without facts.

Don’t go to the worst case scenario (even if it is something more sinister it can also usually be treated) and hear the 90% chance it’s a cyst.

I would just change this to ‘isn’t always cancer’. I know a biopsied B3 that was indeed more sinister in the end (all treated and fine now). O

Pistachiocake · 22/02/2026 19:31

I had almost exactly the same (wonder if we have the same GP, as she said pretty much the same). Went and they did checks and it was all fine, very quickly resolved, have to say I found the NHS brilliant with this compared to all other dealings I/family have had recently. I really hope you have the same experience (if a doctor doesn't think it's fine, surely they'd never say what they said to us). Mine was just a cyst, given the option to have it drained, but I didn't want to use up their time/money so I said thanks but no thanks, if another person had one that was painful they might do that though. It is always best to check though, as we all know finding things early makes a big difference.

Paraguay · 22/02/2026 20:02

Ooh @Pistachiocakedraining is the best. Takes 5 mins

Apologies yes you are quite correct and I’m glad to see you are doing well now

I had a friend who was diagnosed with an 8cm tumour and hers was apparently just below the size at which they can spread. I’m no expert but she told me hers had been caught just in time and that 8cm is just below the threshold.

I’m sorry but just to correct this , a tumour >5cm is more likely to have spread but any size tumour can metastasise as it depends on the breast cancer type.

Hi all , just to report back , surgery went well , will know results on the lump
in 5 weeks ( which is not so fun ) surgeon said it did resemble a fibroadenoma (think I’ve spelt that correctly ), but couldn’t confirm , so we will see .

OP how are you feeling today ? Have you had any further appointments come through ? 🩷

Hi
im so glad your surgery went well. Positive words from the surgeon about the looks of things, hopefully it will turn out to be the fibroadenona (also spelt wrong probably sorry!).

I was coming on here to update as I managed to get a private appointment today. It was a trek from where I live but I couldn’t wait for our local hospital as I was told they’re experiencing delays and it could be a few weeks until I’m seen. It was money we don’t really have at the moment but anyway. Good news is I have a small cyst and the 5cm lump the gp could feel was actually just my breast tissue? I’m not sure if it’s because I am very small chested maybe she mistook it for a lump? I don’t know. Anyway positive news and very relieved.

thank you all so much for your support you’re angels xx

Ah I am so pleased for this for you 🩷, and yes often the waiting for these things is the worst part , so I think you did the correct thing going private. You make sure you have a little celebration the weekend (that’s my plan of things go well ) 🍾

So glad it went well and it’s now gone. Hopefully you will have the results sooner than what they are telling you and all will be well.

Wonderful news @Tulipvase8

Rest and recover from the shock and stress of it all now, and know your experience and questions might help someone else down the line.

X
