WWYD? Effectively given diagnosis by external company instead of NHS

TLDR: told I have sleep apnoea by supplies company - feeling pissed off about it. Advice welcomed

Timeline:
Apr 2025: referred by GP to respiratory medicine at my local hospital (at my request), as I am 99% certain I have sleep apnoea
May 2025: sent machinery for sleep analysis and returned the next day

In the intervening months, I have rung and asked how much longer I have to wait, and was eventually told 52 weeks - fair enough.
Two weeks ago I called again to enquire as my 52 week deadline was 11 weeks away. The receptionist was confused and said I needed to do a sleep study and would not be seen until April at the earliest. I pointed out that I had done a sleep study nearly a year ago. At this point, she then asked me to hold while she spoke to a colleague. She then came back on the line and offered me a telephone appointment for next week. (As you can imagine, this gave me pause for thought as to why I was offered an appointment much sooner.)

So far, this is typical of my interactions with the NHS over the last several years.

But, yesterday I came home and found a letter on my doormat from a medical supplies company, telling me that from now on they would be providing me with masks, tubing etc for my equipment (i.e. CPAP machine).

I get that this might seem relatively minor, but to have my details shared with an external provider when I haven’t been given a diagnosis by a HCP is pretty unprofessional.

In my shoes, WWYD?

Be glad they’ve got the ball rolling maybe 🤷🏻‍♀️

Im confused, do you need the masks / tubing etc or not? If you do i fail to see your problem?

Isn't this the outcome you wanted? I don't think it's an issue, you were already sure you had it.

It’s fair enough to say that at least something is being done, but the only reason I have an appointment is that I’ve pushed. Otherwise, I’d have just had this letter out of the blue, with no idea when I would be seen.
It’s also worth saying that from what I understand, I could potentially lose my driving licence if I am diagnosed but untreated - in fact there was another thread about that earlier this week. (Before anyone asks or says it straight out, I am very careful.)

To be honest I’m not sure there’s much more you’d get.

My mother was investigated for sleep apnea. She did tHe sleep test, few weeks later was called to go and collect her machine. Told to use it every night. Approximately a month later she got a telephone appointment to say the machine was showing an improvement in her sleep. Since then semi regular calls for maybe 12 months along the same lines.

From memory the only mention of my mother’s driving license was when she renewed it at 70 and “self reported”.

That’s actually quite reassuring, @SparklyBrickViper.
Has she found an improvement in her sleep?

Yes she has.

Sound like an admin cock up and your results were possibly overlooked until your phone call kicked it all into action, resulting in a supply request being set up at the same time as your phone appointment so that you won't have to wait too long after your phone appointment.

BlonderThanYou · 20/02/2026 07:51

Just sounds like there was a misunderstanding and admin error on the gps part. A failure to act on results and your phonecall kicked things off.
