I have applied for a new passport and they want my full birth certificate and I dont know the GRO index number. Can anyone help with this please? If I dont have the number they wont send the certificate until middle of march. They have asked for volume number and page number and wondered if these will be on a short birth certificate.
Thanks in advance.

You can get a copy.

Contact the registry office where you were born.

Cross-posted but it might be useful

Where were you born? I work at my local register office. Go on your local registration district website and order a copy certificate. No need to know register numbers etc

I was born in Basildon. Short birth certificate says
Registrar of births and deaths for the sub district of Basildon in the registration district of Brentwood....

You can find out the GRO number on the GRO website itself. If you start the process to order a new certificate you'll be given the option to enter your details and it will look it up. I did it last month for my daughter. I have to say the website was not the most intuitive and it took me a while to work out what to do but I got there in the end!

I ordered my full birth certificate a couple of years ago, I can't remember exactly what they asked for, but I found it all on https://www.freebmd.org.uk/

You can search for the reference details of your birth certificate on there.

Have you never had a passport before?

CowPony17 · 18/02/2026 20:11

I have had a passport before yes. I need to change my name back to my maiden name so maybe this is why?
It says they dont send out the birth certificate until 15 days after you apply for one! Then need to send that to the passport office...

I tried this but my year of birth 1981 is not listed...
