Flour Bags are Useless!!

HolidayHappy123 · 17/02/2026 20:49

Why in 2026 is flour still sold in useless bags that end up spilling everywhere and don’t keep out weevils and flour mites?

If there is a worse packaged product sold in supermarkets I can’t think what it might be except for scissors which are impossible to get out of their packaging without….scissors, but that is annoying in a different way.

Every time I use flour the stupid bags annoy me. Is it only me?

Do posh Mumsnetters decant into matching canisters for display in their carefully curated pantries? [Runs off to look at canisters on Amazon….].

When we lived abroad, and flour came in both plastic and paper.
Both had the possibility of weevils hatching in both them.
We stored new bags of flour in the freezer abd tried to bring them out as the old vag got close to the bottom (but, yes, you can successfully nake cake with flour straight from the freezer!)

I don't know if it's been mentioned but I read recently that if you put the flour into the freezer for a while it kills any mites/eggs. Perhaps Google it to find out.

The brand I use has the option to buy a pack in a metal tin and then buy refill bags. It is so handy.

What is the brand, please?

My friend used to work in catering & she'd do weevil spot checks on my ancient flour, all in good humour. Gosh they're horrible little things, I didn't know about them until she pointed them out.

I couldn’t tell you OP and I don’t have time to ask the cook about what they get up to in the staff kitchen. If there has ever been an infestation of bugs , I wouldn’t know. They deal with this sort of things themselves without troubling me. That’s what they get paid for. I remember asking the cook to source organic bean flour from Tanzania a few years ago, because people were talking about this on a yacht I was on at the time and it sounded like the thing to have. I can’t think what use this flour is in practical terms though.

I would suggest a trip to the local working mill every time you need flour. Take the kids , feed the ducks, have a picnic, it could be a nice day out. Only buy the quantity you need on that day then you won’t have to worry about safe storage. Or send your housekeeper to the mill if you can’t be bothered to do it yourself?

Flour yesterday was probably being used for pancakes...

A trip t'mill sounds delightful. Do you work for the mill marketing board?

I like that they are paper and go straight in recycliing. Breadflour goes in big airtight plastic box.

I am astonished at this thread and completely baffled.

I like the paper packaging, at least it isn't plastic. I open carefully, it doesn't rip and then I just roll down the top of the bag.

I have never had weevils or any other bugs in my flour in the UK. I have lived overseas in places where weevils were an issue, so I know exactly what to look for and I've never had them in flour in the UK. Or flour mites.

I cannot be bothered with decanting anything into other containers, that is what closed cupboard doors are for, to hide the packets so you don't have to bother.

We do go through flour fairly quickly, but even so, what are you all doing to get loads of weevils in your flour....
