If I asked you

"Do you have any personal recommendations for an electrician please"

What would your response be?

Thanks for the response all

A "personal" recommendation is recommending someone who has actually, personally, carried out the work for you and who you vouch for. Not your brother-in-law/uncle/partner who just happens to be an electrician. I thought this was common knowledge.

I was looking for a personal recommendation on facebook for an electrician and all i got was people who knew someone who was an electrian. I don't want a list of local electricians I can get that off google.

I'm just surprised people didn't know this.

You need to be much more explicit, OP because I think this is ambiguous.

By “personal”, I suspected that’s what you meant but I’m a lawyer and I read everything in detail, looking for both the explicit and the implicit.

You need to have said “anyone got a recommendation for an electrician? Someone who has done work for you, please”.

No. I know a great plumber, but haven't found a decent sparkie yet.

My brother. Greatest electrician to ever live.

Yes, we’ve used this one and they did a good job.

I also assumed you meant someone I'd used and would recommend. It wouldn't occur to me to suggest a relative or a neighbour, unless they fell into that category.

I think the exact precise wording is a bit of a red herring. Anyone asking is clearly looking for direct customer recommendations based on work they have had done. Not just "I know someone who does that job"

If you don't know OP (e.g question on a local FB page), recommending your partner/sibling just because you know him doesn't meet that criteria*, and it's no better than when companies recommend themselves!

(*Even worse if you don't mention the personal relationship/pretend it is independent.)

I suppose if you DO know OP, I would give a little more leeway as you presumably wouldn't want to do her dirty when you have to see her again!
