Frozen microwave meal no microwave

DS has come home with two frozen microwave meals in error - we have no microwave.

The meals are Macaroni Cheese and a Sweet and sour chicken and rice. I've taken them out of the packaging and put them into oven proof dishes and covered in foil. They're in the oven at 180.

I have told DS to make sure they are throughly cooked through and piping hot. I'm now doubting myself are they ok to be oven cooked?

Yes, it will be fine!! You could probably eat the macaroni cheese from frozen!!

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 10/02/2026 20:35

Yes, you've just got to decant and heat them, it doesn't matter how. They're in microwavable packaging, but it doesn't mean the only safe way to heat them is in a microwave.

The packaging didn't state microwave only but only has microwave instructions.

DS is currently complaining that he is starving and just wants food! I've told him in future to check the packaging and remember that we don't own a microwave 😂

Of course they are OK to be cooked. How do you think people heated stuff up before microwaves were invented?!

A lot of microwave meals have microwave and cooking instructions, obviously yours don’t but they will be fine

Well he's currently tucking into his Mac n Cheese. He couldn't care less about the cooking instructions he was more excited he got them on clubcard price and they were a bargain.

I had a sweet and sour chicken one the other day, you just poke a load of holes in the lid. Cook for 10 mins, add a tablespoon of water to the rice, stir chicken, put back in for 10 minutes.
