People who’ve had abortions - Will you share your experience?

Calling tomorrow morning. Never had one before. I’m just over 4 weeks pregnant. I’ve done my research and will be looking for an at home medical abortion.
I’m nervous but I know it’s the right thing to do.
would anyone care to share their own experiences?

I’ve had a medical abortion although it was about 20years ago. It was ok. It was very sad but I knew it was the right thing to do. I have never regretted it. It felt like bad period pains for me so physically it wasn’t a massive deal but I struggled with it emotionally for a while. Do you have anyone who can support you?

What do you want to know?

Pills at home at 7 weeks, similar to very intense period pain so needed some pain relief, all finished quickly enough.

not sad at all for me, and absolutely the right choice.

Had two
One at 17 one at 18 -I’m 50 now
both were the medical procedures known as a ‘Dand C’ under general anaesthetic as they did then back then
I had good reasons and didn’t bat an eyelid or suffer any negative feelings at the time nor now
But that was me..
Im so glad now it’s a simple case of tablets at home and let nature take its course as if someone was conflicted or struggling with their choice I would say that what I experienced would not be very pleasant.

best choices I ever made

I have 4 wanted kids now and if by some bizarre reason I got pregnant tomorrow I wouldnt hesitate to abort

I had a miscarriage at home naturally and it was very difficult physically. Had to go to hospital in an ambulance. Wouldn't wish it on anyone. I know an abortion is not the same as a miscarriage but physically both can cause problems that require prompt medical advice.

I’ve had a medical abortion at home, like a crampy period. Much less bleeding than I expected.
also had a miscarriage about the same gestation, physically very similar.

I had a medical abortion over 20 years ago. I didn’t regret it at the time but I sort of do now. With abortion pills if you go down that route it should be simpler as you can do it at home.

Medical over 20 years ago. Sheer relief. Never crosses my mind now.

Wanderlust510 · 09/02/2026 11:20

I had (or attempted) to have an abortion using the pills 7 years ago. It didnt work and by the time I realised I was too far along in my eyes to attempt to abort again. Although this turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to me, it caused a HUGE amount of stress and worry during the pregnancy and early years where i convinced myself that the pills would have caused some kind of disability to my child. It didnt, but I do think failed abortions are not talked about enough.

My experience was very similar to this.

I had a medical abortion 30 years ago when I was at uni. I have never felt anything other than sheer relief. No sadness, no regret. My life would have turned out drastically differently if an abortion wasn’t possible. Wish I could have taken pills to undergo this at home though but that may been harder to hide from my parents as Instayed at home at that point.

Thanks all for your replies. I called this morning, and the soonest they can see me for a consult is Thursday. The waiting is driving my anxiety through the roof 😖

The OP was asking for experiences
of abortion.

i had two clinic appointments, two days apart. First one was an assessment and scan to confirm pregnancy and dates. Second appointment I was given the pills to insert vaginally.

Relatively pain free but I was surprised at how much blood there was. Nothing concerning though.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 09/02/2026 12:52

Just make sure you have stronger painkillers than the paracetomol they tell you to take as the cramping was much worse than period pains (they lied!)
once it’s over (a few hours or cramping) you feel ok.
