Not a dig
I’m trying to understand how some families manage financially cos the maths is not mathing.

i know some guy in Merseyside who has an admin job and hasn’t had a promotion in abt 7 years. He has a partner who doesn’t appear to work regularly … possibly some causal work like cleaning or babysitting but nothing stable…
they have no children who’ve just started school
what I don’t understand is that they…

  1. go on multiple holidays including abroad
  2. seem to live quite comfortably day to day

im not judging …. I’m genuinely confused… I earn more on paper and feel much worse financially

so how does this work..
is this family help, benefits , low housing costs
are taxes too high for high earners
am I underestimating how much loans and tax eat into higher incomes

would be interested in hearing different povs

Maybe he's a drug dealer?

cestlavielife · 01/02/2026 20:42

Why dont you ask him?

LadyKenya · 01/02/2026 20:44

Ask him, then you will get your answer, straight from the horse's mouth.

Maybe they earn a lot more than you think and/or manage their money a lot better than you do?

may be live in a small accomodation, use public transport on no transport at all, don't eat out, just save it for the holidays - and perhaps she like me, does her own hair, gives 0 fuck for nails, spa, clothing styles and drinking nights outs with the girls

They probably spend their time working instead of being nosy and judgmental

  1. Benefits
  2. Being extremely frugal
  3. Debt - the UK has a personal debt issue
  4. Prioritising survival over health, happiness or luxury.
  5. Lower costs - they may have inherited a house or a sum of money.
  6. Crime… it pays until they get caught
  7. His wife might do work from home or she may have sold a business in the past or designed an app, written a book

Benefits and credit cards

I mean it's pretty obvious it's this. Plus probably loans too. Are you trying to start yet another benefit bashing thread by any chance 🤔
