At what point do I give up? I feel like I'm in too deep at this point 😂

Depends what its for.
In the summer I was on hold for 3.5 hours for dwp but it was needed (didn't want them to stop my ESA). I wouldn't have held on for that long for many other things.

HowlongwillIbeonholdfor · 01/02/2026 14:52

I need to cancel a holiday and the only way it's over the phone 🫠

I find the best way to speed these things up is to do something very inconvenient, like go to the toilet and then magically they come on the line!

What's the hold music?!

This has crossed my mind! I need to get a load of washing out, so maybe I'll do that.

The hold music is so infuriating, it's just a repetitive thumping. I'm sure I'll be hearing it my dreams tonight.

What company?

Biscuits4 · 01/02/2026 14:58

Is there a separate line for bookings? If so, maybe try that as well if you have another phone available - someone might be more likely to pick up.

plentyofsunshine · 01/02/2026 14:59

Try ringing them 5 minutes before they close.

HowlongwillIbeonholdfor · 01/02/2026 14:59

It's P&O. Good point, I'll have a look!

Are you going to lose any money?

pandora206 · 01/02/2026 15:06

Have you tried though Facebook Messenger? I've found that that's sometimes a quicker way to get in touch.

Yes definitely get the washing out!

Oh that's so annoying, I hate generic hold music that is just useless noise.

My GP's surgery has generic plinky plonky music and I just make up lyrics to it now... you have to act quite swiftly to stop when they pick up though!

bedtimestories · 01/02/2026 15:09

I just get on with my day when I'm on hold. I just take it off speaker phone when they answer and mute when on the toilet

FirstdatesFred · 01/02/2026 15:11

Oh P&O definitely try again and press the option for sales/new bookings. They always pick up faster. 4/5 times I got someone who also deals with existing bookings, only once I got someone who had to transfer me on (but then I just started again and got straight through to a helpful person via new sales)

I used their live chat and got through immediately.

BerryTwister · 01/02/2026 15:24

I’ve had to contact HMRC a lot recently. They often take nearly 2 hours to answer. I just have the phone on speaker, and carry it around while I do chores.

HowlongwillIbeonholdfor · 01/02/2026 15:37

You can't cancel on live chat unfortunately. I've been reading, now over 2 hrs. Going to try the new sales trick now!

3 hours and 27 minutes is my guess

ErrolTheDragon · 01/02/2026 16:00

My guess is that they actually aren’t working today so you’ll be on hold till at least 9am tomorrow morning.

HowlongwillIbeonholdfor · 01/02/2026 16:41

Update! I called the booking line as suggested and I did get to talk someone very friendly quickly. They said there are very limited staff on a Sunday for customer service, so I'll try again first thing tomorrow.

So you’ve made no progress! Damn what a waste of time.

is delaying to tomorrow going to result in you losing more deposit?

Basically yes! No it's not, I still have a while before the rest is due, but I just wanted to tick it off.
