I just had to share this silly little thing which has made me gloriously happy.
I have advanced emphysema and spend a lot of my time reading , online , crocheting or watching the world go by from my window. Ill be honest and say its very lonely. I have friends but get so tired so easily that visits are few and far between and getting rarer. Its not fun to be either person in a visit that has to be cut short cos of my breathing/coughing. DH tries his best but he has friends/hobbies/ things to do/ places to be. I spend a lot of time alone and am not allowed to drive for medical reasons. My world is very small. At least it was until a few days ago.
My oxygen concentrator has been prescribed and delivered. Weve tried it out. Bought a rucksack cos its heavy ( Im small of stature) and after a few false starts today I went for a walk!
I walked unaided.I sound like Darth Vader ( the machine bit not the deep scary voice) but I was out in the fresh air. People waved and smiled . Some said hello and I felt good. I saw my new neighbours up close for the first time and felt like a person again.
I'lk be able to do housework again ( i know . How sad) Have visitors without getting too tired. Go to friends. Join in things and not have to sit and watch. Ill be able to walk along the seafront in summer. Help out in the garden a little bit. I have so much to look forward to. First thing Im gonna do tomorrow? Walk to the local Greggs and get a really bad for me breakfast and coffee. Im so so happy. If you got this far thanks for reading and I hope your day is as good as mine!

That's brilliant news OP. Thank you for the reminder to not take anything for granted and to find joy in the little things.

And to the rest of us (fortunate with good health) - you don't know what you've got til it's gone!

Ladybugheart · 01/02/2026 11:09

Genuinely I am so happy for you. We've been in a similar position with husbands health and it's debilitating, lonely, hard..everything you've described. Glad that things are looking up for you ❤️

HeyBulldog · 01/02/2026 11:31

Thank you for reminding us not to take our mobility for granted .
Could you get something like a suitcase for it if you are on the smaller side . Go a bit further if you want . Guessing you can also go further on a wheelchair too.

Hope you enjoy the incoming spring 🌼

Invisablepanic · 01/02/2026 11:58

What a great post! Enjoy your Greggs.

500mileslong · 01/02/2026 12:01

I love this op! We take so many of these things for granted ❤️

TheChosenTwo · 01/02/2026 12:03

Best thread I’ve read in a while op, thanks for sharing and may this new found freedom and joy last forever.

My mum has a mobility impairment following a stroke and her world is very small. She’s unable to do anything solo anymore (still works but from home every day) and it’s really sad. My siblings and I took her for a posh dinner out last week and she was loving it, we sort of take for granted that our stepdad does everything for her, we aren’t terrible children by any means, we all visit her a lot, she came here for Christmas etc but it’s the act of getting out that seems to really bring her alive and we all made a pact that we’d do it more no matter how challenging the logistics are for us.
Thanks for sharing your perspective of what this has done for you. So thrilled 💐

This is such good news and it is really nice of you to share it with us. I too have been unwell, nothing nearly as bad as you, but thanks to some new medication I am recovering.

I know what you mean about being grateful for small blessings. Thanks to my meds I am able to eat again and am putting on a little bit of weight.

Teacup40 · 01/02/2026 12:07

What a lovely post that's Brill op!! You enjoy your Greggs!!

I'm so happy for you people don't realise until they are disabled how small your world becomes and how exhausting everything is and how restricted your life becomes. Enjoy every moment of your new found freedom 🥰

Redkatagain · 01/02/2026 12:13

That is so wonderful. I’m so pleased for you. I walked over 10000 steps yesterday for the second time this year. I spent most of last year with chronic anaemia and ten solid months of blood poisoning.
the difference is incredible and if you’ve not experienced it, you just wouldn’t understand it. I can’t otherwise describe how amazing it feels.

I am so pleased for you and I wish you all the best.
For those who have never experienced this, it is like being reborn

Gasbox · 01/02/2026 12:16

That's wonderful OP and your happiness is infectious, I'm smiling now after a fairly miserable morning so thank you! I know exactly what you mean by feeling like a person again, different reasons in my case but I'm still getting a buzz out of doing normal, everyday things and it's been over a year since things started to change for the better for me so you have lots of happy days still to come Smile

BitOutOfPractice · 01/02/2026 12:17

Oh op how wonderful. Your post has made me so happy too. Thank you for spreading the joy!

DiscoDuck40 · 01/02/2026 12:18

You've reminded me of that wonderful Nina Simone song 'feeling good'! Have a lovely Sunday, OP xx

LetGoLetThem1234 · 01/02/2026 12:37

@OneSharpGoose Reading your post has brought tears to my eyes and I feel so happy for you 💗 Enjoy and savour every bite of your "bad" breakfast tomorrow.

Thank you for sharing your re-entry into the world. Xx
