To not visit Orlando right now (or US)

Hotchocolate4 · 25/01/2026 16:52

My MIL (who is lovely) really wants to take the family to Orlando and will contribute a small amount to the cost the rest will be covered by us.

I feel a bit torn as I really want to the take the kids, however I saw a post on Instagram that made me think. It was along the lines of would you consider going on holiday to Germany knowing that you are funding the economy of nazi germany (obviously talking about when hitler was in power).

I disagree with what is happening in the US. The loss of bodily autonomy, ICE etc. Therefore does it make me a hypocrite to go on holiday there?

Has anyone actually changed holiday plans or am I thinking about this too deeply?

I’m American and I wouldn’t travel to the US right now. I’ve let my passport expire and have no imminent plans to renew it (I’m a dual national so travel everywhere else on my other passport).

That said, from a safety perspective, Florida is pretty right leaning, so there would be unlikely to be civil unrest and ICE attacks like we are seeing in more Democratic leaning areas.

There is a similar thread in the Holiday section. Would your MIL consider somewhere else?

I personally wouldn't go there at the moment - the most recent murder in Minnesota of Alex Pretti is truly horrific. There could be a civil war in the US - it's awful to see such hatred and inhumanity.

Ahh thanks I will go have a read! I just feel that the family will think I’m being dramatic so just wanted some other opinions.

I wouldn’t go. We’ve just cancelled a dream Christmas trip to New York because of what’s going on in the states. We have friends who live in Minneapolis and hearing from them what it’s like there at the moment, it just doesn’t feel right to go and spend money in the states or pretend nothing is going on. It’s a drop in the ocean, no one is going to notice our little tiny protest but if lots and lots of people cancel trips and the tourist industry there suffers, perhaps the impact of that on airlines, hotels, economy etc might slow the governments actions down. I’m not optimistic on that, but money is about the only thing the Trump administration seem to care about, and if there’s pressure from big business to be less aggressive, maybe things will calm down a little bit. I don’t know- there isn’t much people can do, it probably won’t make any difference, but I refuse to visit there any time soon out of principle.

Keroppi · 25/01/2026 17:08

Seems a bit overdramatic to me, the USA is a huge place. But I don't care that much about what my measly tourist money goes towards - surely you'd just be lining Mickey Mouse's pockets in Orlando anyway? Hardly the Nazi party! If MIL happy to fund I wouldn't bite the hand that feeds and enjoy the holiday.

No-one is 1000% ethical all the time, it's impossible unless you live off grid and make your own materials and food.

itsthetea · 25/01/2026 17:10

You are not alone - there is a clear drop of people wanting to holiday in the states

I wouldn’t go

Tiswa · 25/01/2026 17:12

We were in Orlando at Christmas (so before it kicked off) and whilst 95% of it was normal Disney stuff there was an air on both sides.

There were 3-4 MAGA about also there were times in the very patriot bits (American Adventire) where Obama was cheered and silence for Trump.

There is an unease I think that I have seen before

We we are due to do California in April and it is tricky

BurntBroccoli · 25/01/2026 17:14

God no!

I've noticed a lot of “Visit Orlando “ads on FB over the last couple of days. Guess a LOT of people are cancelling and rightly so.

Mcdhotchoc · 25/01/2026 17:15

We had firm plans to do California this year.
Now have firm plans to not go to the States, and also am rethinking lots of things I spend money on.
How old are the dc? We had a fabulous May half term week a few years ago at Legoland in Denmark.

LadyCampanulaTottington · 25/01/2026 17:17

We have dear friends in Washington DC and they are currently making plans to emigrate.

It’s so unstable right now anyone would be mad to go.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 25/01/2026 17:17

YANBU, OP. I won't be travelling to the US in the foreseeable either.

I've seen loads of threads about this, it's not something I'm considering so haven't paid enough attention to say what people are thinking but you might find them by searching

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 25/01/2026 17:19

No, I wouldn't go now.

Parker231 · 25/01/2026 17:20

We live close to the border but have stopped going over for lunch and shopping. Come to Canada instead 🍁🇨🇦

AgnesMcDoo · 25/01/2026 17:20

USA is on our no-fly list until post trump

Same here. Him and + any associated administration.

Hatty65 · 25/01/2026 17:23

I would not go to the States for the same reasons I would not go on holiday to Dubai, or China or any country that demonstrates a moral vacuum in relationship to my own values.

maydayjun · 25/01/2026 17:32

Cancelled our California holiday a few days ago. Thankfully everything was flexible so we have only lost about y £200 all in. Just feel like we have to vote with our feet. I will spend my hard earned money in another country. I feel sorry for ordinary Americans who will lose money though drop in tourism

CarelessWimper · 25/01/2026 17:50

Seeing as your MIL isn’t paying for much of the holiday, I don’t think her want to go there is the final vote.

The world is a very big place so personally whilst there are several places I would like to visit in the States, I am putting those on hold and forcing myself to holiday elsewhere, it’s not exactly like it’s the USA or nowhere else.

Where else do you fancy going? Maybe the dc would like to do something else?

Snoken · 25/01/2026 17:52

I wouldn’t go and I cancelled a trip I had booked there for last year. Going there is a statement now and it goes against what I believe in. I want none of my money to fund the US. It might be a tiny fraction but if enough people take that stance it matters.

NotThatSerious · 25/01/2026 17:53

We went to Orlando recently and absolutely loved it. We’re going again in April for two weeks but do what you feel is right for you.

FionnulaTheCooler · 25/01/2026 17:55

We were planning to go to New York in the autumn, depending on DD's exam results (she wants to go so it's an incentive to study hard) but the way things are going just now I'm holding off booking anything and I'm not normally a last minute booker. A lot could happen in the next few months so I suppose we'll wait and see how things stand later in the year.

Pointlesssewing · 25/01/2026 17:55

We were planning on going to California for a holiday this year, but changed our minds when trump got back in. I can’t countenance going to a country led by him and inflicting such awful things on their citizens. We’ve booked to go to Canada instead. Yes I know 2 brits changing their mind will have no effect on America but it was a no brainer to us. He’s ruining his nation and I suspect I might not be allowed in once they saw how many anti trump posts I’ve liked on social media….

tumbletoast · 25/01/2026 18:07

There's a Disneyland and Universal Studios park in Tokyo, Japan. I'd seriously consider going there instead. Might actually be better than the trip that's been proposed.
