Was this a premonition?

Purplewoodpecker · 19/01/2026 13:32

So I came across a news article online about a film that is coming out in July 2027. I was sat there thinking about how much my mum would probably like it when I suddenly and completely unexpectedly thought to myself "She won't be alive by then to see it".

For context, my mum is healthy, in her sixties and has no known health concerns, so it isn't like she is very old or suffering from a serious illness etc.

I don't know where this thought came from, it was so out of the blue but it felt so real. It is nothing that has ever really happened to me before. Now I'm worrying was this a premonition?

I am genuinely not trying to be an arse but you won't know until either July 2027 or before if anything sadly does happen to her.

Honestly I would think maybe your brain saw 2027 as being some hugely futuristic number like 50 years away or something rather than next year and that is why your brain went that way. Do not dwell on it. Do not tell her about it either!

Purplewoodpecker · 19/01/2026 14:13

No I am definitely not going to tell her. It just shook me up a bit because it was so random and out of the blue.

It sounds more like an intrusive thought tbh rather than premonition.

Spot on. My DD had thoughts like this when she developed OCD.

Purplewoodpecker · 19/01/2026 18:24

Thanks everyone. I have no idea what triggered it, if anything. So random.

I completely understand the scary feeling especially when it is out of the blue.

Thoughts aren’t facts. You don’t have to believe everything you think. Sounds like an intrusive thought, these can come and go depending on what’s happening in life.

Can you do something to relax tonight?

HowDoYouSolveAProblemLikeMyRear · 19/01/2026 19:39

Intrusive thoughts are horrible, but they can be used for good.

If she were to die in the 18 months, is there anything you'd regret not doing now? Questions you'd like to hear answers to about your childhood or family history, advice you'd like to ask for, gratitude you want to record express, experiences you'd love to share, or maybe even just time together.

It's a horrible thought and there's no reason to believe it, but you can still learn from it

TalulahJP · 19/01/2026 19:45

i thought that i had one about a relative a few months ago - that she wouldn’t see christmas.

shes still here. although v sick. i doubt she will see the summer if there isn’t a big change soon. i hope to God she improves. cannot imagine her not being here tbh.

I agree with this. It might be that your subconscious is saying 'your mum is getting on in years now, make the most of the time you have together'. That seems more likely than you having a premonition, and is good advice because everyone, as they get older, finds that what they can do gradually becomes more limited.

Making the most of the time you have with loved ones while they are fit and active is a good idea, because even if they have many years of life ahead of them, they might not always be active years.

Sorry to hear that. I've got my fingers crossed that she improves

Yes, it could be. I get similar things.

When I was pregnant, I arranged a haircut for a Thursday (when I was 35 weeks). After making the appointment, I just knew I wouldn’t be around for it, so re-booked it for the Tuesday (two days earlier). I had my haircut at midday on the Tuesday and the babies were born 9 hours later.

I've had premonitions all my life. When I was a kid I sometimes thought I made things happen by thinking about them. Not bad things, just stuff like 'my bus is going to be ten minutes late today' when it was usually as regular as clockwork. I don't get them often these days, but I do pay attention to them when they appear.

Purplewoodpecker · 19/01/2026 21:02

@TheClocksFast

Was that a random thought that just popped up out of nowhere though or a gut feeling though?

@justtheotheronemrswembley

So you think mine was actually a premonition. Oh gosh this is making me feel anxious now.

No, of course not. I have those kinds of thoughts occasionally. It’s just my fears about losing people I love. It’s not some kind of Cassandra-like intuition.

LadyIrony · 19/01/2026 21:20

I'm a bit 'woo' so I'm not adverse to the idea of premonitions.

However it is easy to have a random thought and often they aren't going to come true. A bit like dreams are often random and might be influenced by your personal emotional/mental/physical state but will rarely be true, and that would be mostly coincidental, in the wider world.

You could ask her if she's been feeling well lately, but only very occasionally or you'll make her paranoid, or worried about you.

In instances like this I'd suggest the only power you have is that if your mother says anything about a health niggle you can advise her to get that checked out, rather than dismissing it. It's easy to 'watch and wait' with a new symptom, or advise someone to do that, but for the next 18 months advise her to speak to her doctor to put her mind at ease (and yours).

Zov · 19/01/2026 21:54

Gosh, that's scary. I hope your premonition is wrong though!

Whosthetabbynow · 19/01/2026 21:59

Have lots of these. Fairly infrequently but I definitely get them. Yesterday I was just relaxing and a feeling came over me. I felt a surge of happiness, like I knew something good was going to happen. Three hours later I found out my lovely niece is expecting her first baby. Not discussed. Just random loveliness.

Purplewoodpecker · 19/01/2026 22:03

No, I KNEW it would be too late. But I’ve had lots of premonitions so I’ve got a knack for it.

LoungingontheSopha · 20/01/2026 08:20

In fairness, buses are frequently ten minutes late! And you don’t need to be psychic to realise that a twin pregnancy in particular could easily involve going into labour at 35 weeks, so best to get your hair appointment out of the way asap.
