Nominating Henry VII, the first Tudor. Sorted taxation, prohibited private armies. Created peace.

Oh I’ll have a listen to that. The name alone is great!

I was going to say Henry II also.

Spoiler alert: He won a Rex Factor.

I'll vote when one of them decides the monarchy should be abolished.

The widespread appreciation and enthusiasm for Henry VII has surprised me. Compared to some others, history treats him as a minor figure.

Overseas, I'd have to agree with Ferdinand and Isabella.

On the other side of the story, nominations for the worst?

Can I say Charles I first? For the Civil War... Although there were some right rotters, and there were earlier civil wars.

Surely King John was the worst!

Henry VII - ended Wars of Roses (you can't blame him for Pretenders prolonging it for another two years), left country stable - in CREDIT (which no other monarch ever did) and with an 18 year old male heir.

Elizabeth was useless - but excellent at propaganda. She was dithery, indecisive, made no financial efforts to help the country except for being personally tight with money and arguably led to Civil War by allowing the puritan choir far too much leeway, and the monarch not enough money to live on. Spent an expensive and pointless 20 years at war with Spain.

Well we were under threat by Spain during that time, if thats what you mean by war. A country needs to be able to defend itself.

I don’t agree Henry VII “ended the Wars of the Roses”

Everyone was dead (Dave), underage or attainted. If HVII hadn’t chosen to betroth himself to EofY and to invade, would any other Lancastrian have challenged RIII? HVII wasn’t engaged in other battles in which he beat other Yorkists.

I think HVII was a decent enough king, but I think the Wars of the Roses had run their course at that point regardless of him.

Stephen was pretty bad. And Charles I? There’s lots of contenders I think!

What a great thread!

Can’t believe Edward VIII isn’t getting a mention. You know where you are with a tyrant, but a king who doesn’t have any understanding of or interest in doing the job is quite another. Wouldn’t want him next to you in the trenches.

I sometimes wonder what Shakespeare would’ve made of that guy. It could actually have been amazing – certainly not a scenario he’d covered in the other plays.

helplessbanana · 19/01/2026 15:12

QEII.

We still say that loads 😂

I was thinking more of Warwick, son of Clarence (both underage and attainted 😀) rather than the Princes in the Tower (crazy name, as either neither was a Prince, or one was a Prince and one a King, but there we are…)

Other than HVII, I don’t think there were any plausible Lancastrians left to lead an army…?

Frederik X. He is hot.

Just had to look him up. Wouldn’t like to be in his shoes at the moment. This will definantly be his defining moment.
