Are these conspiracy theories or does dp have a point?

DP watches a lot of YouTube videos and feeds by men who seem angry at the world. He regularly tells me things he has found out, or that he thinks are happening but not being discussed in msm.

This weekend he's suggested that AI companies, led by Elon Musk and similar, are going to buy access to our banks and using technology will scrape money from our bank accounts without our permission. He also believes that oil companies are actively and purposefully causing the ice caps to melt as fast as possible so they can get new trade routes, rather than seeing it happen and cynically benefitting from it.

The things he mentions always have some truth but he takes it further than most people and he gets quite heated.

Is he a bit ott or am I too naive?

It's total bollocks. All of it.

The more you search for a particular topic online, the more of it will keep coming up. That's how algorithms work. He is feeding his own habit, and the more he sees, the more convinced he will become.

I don't know what the answer is though, or how you can handle this going forward.

itsthetea · 18/01/2026 00:42

Well part of me says this is nuts

and the other part of me says some people could get very rich from climate change and I don’t doubt some see it as a wonderful opportunity - wether musk sees it that way I don’t know but I would not out it past him

Sanasaaa · 18/01/2026 01:08

Instead of wondering if the boyfriends algorithm is factual, consider if he is hugely enhancing every aspect of your life.
Do you enjoy dating him?

Is he rich enough that that Musk creature would want to 'scrape' his little bank account? Sounds pretty embarrassing.

EmeraldRoulette · 18/01/2026 01:38

Well, there are loads of things happening that MSM don't report

But these things? There is a kernel of truth in the ice cap thing in the sense that oil companies tried to deny reports about the industry damaging the ecosystem - but what he's saying is completely different. And my experience of a lot of people who shout about the ecosystem is that they don't really want to go back to living in the dark ages. Obviously neither do I, but I'm not a supporter of "just stop oil".

Do I think that there are people poised to benefit from alteration of trade routes? Of course. It's forward planning.

With the AI thing, are you sure he didn't say they were going to scrape data? That seems entirely likely. That gradually we will be asked to sign stuff agreeing to a data scrape and if all the banks do it, we can't just use a different bank.

Actually stealing from people's bank accounts, no.

has he got Musk derangement syndrome?

there's a balance in life, and yes, he sounds way OTT.

Elbowpatch · 18/01/2026 01:42

Advise him to stick to cat videos.

Tadpolesinponds · 18/01/2026 01:43

Trump is doing everything he can to destroy the climate. I've read an article in a reputable newspaper which said that his behaviour can't be fully explained by his wanting to make as much money as possible - it seems to be enjoyment of destruction for destruction's sake. This could be an alternative explanation.

EmeraldRoulette · 18/01/2026 01:47

@Tadpolesinponds please tell me what you think Trump is doing to destroy the climate deliberately and as a conscious choice

I'm going to bed now, but I'm curious about this.

Ahhhblissful · 18/01/2026 01:49

I do like a conspiracy thread.
I also like them that have their own conspiracy`s.

This is a good starting point:
Trump withdraws US from key climate treaty and dozens of other groups - BBC News

US President Donald Trump, wearing a blue suit and red tie, points with his finger in front of an American flag.

Trump withdraws US from key climate treaty and dozens of other groups

The White House says the decision was taken because those entities "no longer serve American interests".

Lurkingandlearning · 18/01/2026 06:16

I don’t see how AI could scrape accounts without the customer seeing it on their bank statements and banks allowing it to happen?

Does he have a theory how it could go unnoticed?

Malariahilaria · 18/01/2026 07:32

I actually agree about the climate change and arctic routes one. I saw a few things on that and did a bit of digging. Russia would benefit hugely from the arctic trade route and it would lessen the control Egypt and Panana have over shipping routes. Whilst I don't expect Trump to actively start bombing ice bergs to open them up (although who knows with him), I expect someone's shown him a map with $$ all over it if he can control those routes so he'll certainly do all he can to speed it up. Plus it plays well to his industrial base to deny climate change.

frizz · 18/01/2026 07:32

EmeraldRoulette Lurkingandlearning. Definitely money. I think the idea is that Trump's billionaire 'friends' are slowly getting laws changed that will allow them to get away with this. And I accept there is some truth in this, that Trump cares more about profit than fairness. But we're in the UK so I don't see how it could happen. I think dp takes a small kernel of truth and his imagination runs with it.

Perhaps challenge him to only come to you when he's engaged a bit of critical thinking and done some research from reputable sites. I love a good conspiracy as well but I always go digging within news sites that are well respected. TikTok and YouTube are hugely entertaining but anyone can say anything on their so its all best taken with a big lump of salt.

daisychain01 · 18/01/2026 09:45

I'd be more worried about being with a DP who elects to watch all this shite and gets taken in by it,

Aye.

Not only that but bores on about it after immersing himself in the shite.

Does he have nothing better to do OP?
Is there any benefit to him, you or the world in him reading all this crap and regurgitating it?

Give him a fat DIY list and sign him up for some volunteering. That'll keep him busy and productive.

JamesClyman · 18/01/2026 18:05

You need a DP with more brain and less gulability.

EmeraldRoulette · 18/01/2026 20:08

@Tadpolesinponds I had a feeling you'd link to that

Withdrawing from treaties and not worrying about emissions is not the same as actively trying to damage the climate, but I do take things too literally sometimes.

I thought you were going to say something about the development of cloud seeding, blocking sun, which has been around for a while. (i'm sure I've been accused of conspiracy until posters looked that up). So much as I blame Trump for a lot of things, I can't blame him for that stuff.

@frizz what you say about taking a kernel of truth and running with it - that sounds like what he's doing. But if he doesn't think about the reality behind his suggestions, that's pretty mad.

I think some people had a fixed idea of the world, and now they've got access to more information, they tend to panic a lot more. For example, if you mention the Tuskegee experiment, the release of gas on the London underground, people are shocked.

Sadly, politicians and powerful people have been screwing us over for a long time - probably since time began.

Tadpolesinponds · 19/01/2026 16:42

@EmeraldRoulette Blocking American scientists from attending international conferences on climate change is real authoritarianism, surely? In order to prevent action being taken to protect the climate.
"The White House has already blocked US scientists attending a meeting in China.
Any restrictions on travel or the participation of US researchers could significantly delay the release of the next set of IPCC reports, including potentially its mitigation report - a key document guiding governments on how to tackle climate change."

EmeraldRoulette · 19/01/2026 17:04

@Tadpolesinponds I never said it wasn't

It's just you used very specific language about destroying the climate, so I thought you were going to tell me something else scary that he was doing that I don't know about!

Like those "dimming the Sun"
experiments for example (if you are reading this and you think I'm making stuff up, I'm not, sadly).

Nothing would surprise me at this point. my mum just asked me what the news was, and I said "I don't know, I've been hiding from it all day!"

but these are the conditions that create the mental state of @frizz DP

It's like politicians are trying to drive us all mad.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 19/01/2026 17:07

It's total bollocks. All of it.

Yep.

The idea that JFK was assassinated as a result of some huge conspiracy of thousands involving the CIA, Mafia, Cuban exiles, Lyndon Johnson etc... Absolute tripe.

Quite clear that the pressure of office got too much for him and his head simply exploded.

Newbie8918 · 19/01/2026 17:13

Some of this is nuts and some will have some truth to it. Do/will banks share/sell data……yes. They also buy date from partners. One example I can think of is click data for sites such as Rightmove which will be sold to banks as a lending indicator. Also if your bank has a reward scheme, they probably share financial habits to target you for rewards. Eg payments to cinemas etc.
I don’t think there’s a world where anyone will get away with ‘scraping’ funds from someone’s acc. That’s fraud.
Some conspiracies that I believe are partly true are
big pharmaceuticals not working as hard as they could towards cures for certain conditions.
Yes, also to some industries not being as distraught as they should be about climate change, is another.
But he’s being a victim of his own suspicions here…..before long the algorithm will be feeding him nonsense!
