So you know all those union flags that went up on lampposts…

They appeared one night on the lampposts all down my street. Not debating them by the way - I spent most of last year trying to stay alive so I honestly couldn’t have given a shit.

There is one on a lamppost right outside my house and it’s now tatty and dirty.

I’d love to get up a ladder and take the bloody thing down, but I really don’t live in the best area.

Anyway, when is acceptable to just get the bloody thing down? Everyone who was shouting about them and how great they are has got bored of that now and they just all look so ragged and horrible.

I would just leave it, it’s not affecting you. If it was on your property I would understand.

Maybe post in the local facebook group? Then the ones who put it up could take it down or replace it.

TooBigForMyBoots · 10/01/2026 12:28

Call the people who put them up. I'm sure they'll be round to take them down or replace them in no time.

Seeline · 10/01/2026 12:31

If it looks as though it might blow off into traffic I'd report to the local council as it's dangerous and could cause an accident.

Talltreesbythelake · 10/01/2026 12:32

Does your council have an online contact us form? I would report the flags on that. They will remove the flags from lamp posts and the reason is for public safety rather than politics so you can stay anonymous.

Manifestsleep · 10/01/2026 12:44

Leave them up to represent those who put them up - all about gestures and slogans but no real idea of consequence and long term strategy.

Our council won’t even grit the roads, they won’t care about some flags!

Someone round our way put a fresh crop up over Xmas, I bloody hate it and all they stand for.

Could you imagine 🤣

No idea who put them up round here actually.

Tatty and dirty quite a good metaphor for Farage and his ilk.

It’s still on with the what Looks like cable
ties. It’s not about to fly off, it’s just gone all ragged.

I spent a lot of time in bed out of action last year looking at the bloody thing, flapping about out of the window. It’s looking worse for wear now (they all are really).

Have you got a local facebook page? Go on there and ask when people might be coming around to sort

LupaMoonhowl · 10/01/2026 12:51

Honestly find a more rewarding hobby than obsessing about a flag 😂😂

I don’t have social media. And this isn’t the nicest place in the world - I reckon post like that would spark something.

I’m just so fed up of a tatty flag at the end of my drive.

The ones in the market town close to me are the same - they were obviously really cheap, so most of the colour seems to have stripped off them, and they’ve made the lamp posts all black and dirty as well.

I had a a couple of back operations, I really don’t have a lot better to do but to stare out the window at it!

The official council ones not far from me have been vandalised. 😂

Isn’t it amazing that your country’s flag could be co-opted to such a degree by a political group, that your feelings completely change about it over your lifetime.

It could be a flag of my face on the lamppost, with a message of how great I am, telling everyone to post ten pound notes through my letter box and I’d still be irked that it’s tatty and dirty and right outside my house.

I am not debating the flags or what they represent - I have enough to think about in my own life right now.

I just don’t want to open a can of worms in the shithole I live in by removing one. I was just wondering what others thought.

These bloody flags are so offensive. As others have said though I think the grubbiness better represents the people who put them up.

Gliblet · 10/01/2026 13:15

Try your local Reform UK candidate, they've been paying people to drive round the country putting the wretched tatty things up so the least they can do is keep them presentable.

VillaOfReducedCircumstances · 10/01/2026 13:16

Is it even OK for any political party to put whatever they like up on lamp posts thiugh? There must be some rules around this.

clarrylove · 10/01/2026 13:18

You can report it on Fix My Street.

AnotherNC22 · 10/01/2026 13:21

The flags round us were all reported on fix my street and the council came and took them down. You can report anonymously so id try there first.

She’s forced to look at a shitty piece of material that some no head put up directly outside her house and who didn’t think or care about what happens next when it inevitably starts to fall apart. She’s not obsessing, she’s just trying to work out who actually should take responsibility for talking it down (or maintaining it). Totally reasonable.

ChinFluff46 · 10/01/2026 13:27

I think someone put them up again. There was a notice before about them not being allowed. The funny thing is the road that they've been put up on and are lining on left to right is an absolute shit road with some traffic lights and a newsagent. So proud to be British 🤣
