I’ve seen two drugs incidents in two days

I live in London. Yesterday morning I saw someone squatting down in a phone box handling what looked like drug paraphernalia. This morning I witnessed a drug deal - two men (one on a bike) facing the wall as I walked past and one handing over a small packet to the other. These were both in the morning on my way to work. Obviously we all know this goes on but to see it openly in broad daylight at that time of day was quite shocking. Both were in areas that were quite busy with pedestrians. I’m not sure what my point is really - it just makes you feel unsafe.

Welcome to mumsnet! I'm somewhat amazed that you managed to find a phone box in London - I thought they'd pretty much all been removed years ago except for the very few left in place for the queues of tourists to take photos in front of. Whereabouts was this?

mzpq · 09/01/2026 11:25

Have you not lived in a city for more than 5 minutes?

I'm shocked this is the first time you've seen this sort of daily occurrence in broad daylight.

Fbfbfvfvv · 09/01/2026 11:25

Where I live you see things like this every day and I live in a standard town!

Purlant · 09/01/2026 11:28

Maybe I’m immune to it as I live there, but I’ve never noticed this! Cornwall on the other hand seemed to be a hotbed of drugs!

GasperyJacquesRoberts · 09/01/2026 11:28

I'm sure it's absolutely coincidental that this thread pops up from a new poster the day after Reform announced its new candidate for London mayor who will be campaigning on a platform of reducing crime.

Last week i was walking to the train station at 7am to get to work. A lady pushing a push chair with a toddler sat in it and a kid (about 5 yrs old) trailing by her side.

Yup, she was smoking a joint as she walked by, I could not believe it! how bad must your addiction be to smoke on the school run, people really have no shame these days.

princesspadam · 09/01/2026 12:45

See this every day where I work, but not where I live.

i imagine that’s all hidden cocsine use at parties

333FionaG · 09/01/2026 12:47

Drug dealing is rife in every area, not just cities.

Same here, been witnessing stuff like this for 30 years. OP must walk round with their eyes closed.

Try walking around Sheffield city centre at any time of the day. I can pretty much guarantee you’ll walk past someone shooting up or passed out on a pavement.

Perrylobster · 09/01/2026 12:50

I live in a sleepy village and saw one in the park in broad daylight. I think once you know what you’re looking for it’s on your radar and you spot it more.

Flaok · 09/01/2026 12:58

I think it's sad, but it doesn't necessarily make me feel "unsafe."

In what way do you think they're more dangerous than the beered-up people coming out of pubs every day? If anything, the druggies seem to be more passive.

And in Bolton.

I was on a bus with my sister about 20 years ago. She was in the MET and as we meandered along the route she was pointing out all the sex workers, drug dealers etc. I was quite shocked but once it's been pointed out to you you see it everywhere and can't quite believe you didn't see it before.

holly97 · 09/01/2026 19:13

I know it goes on of course, but I’ve never seen it so brazenly and as early as my morning commute.

I feel unsafe because drug dealers are criminals and many drug addicts need to steal to feed their habit.

Would you report to local police or is it not worth it?

You thought they were going to leap out and mug you in the morning in broad daylight in a busy area with lots of pedestrians?

I don't mean to be offensive, but you sound a little bit naïve.

There are going to be criminals anywhere. It's just part of human nature. But these guys sound like they were very much busy with their own affairs and didn't want anything to do with you at all.

Yup!

I've lived in London for 19 years and have never seen anything like what you've described (and I don't live in the posh parts!)

Satisfiedkitty · 09/01/2026 19:41

I walk past this every day on my way to work, and outside my office. Every other teenager sitting on our high street is smoking weed, and the dealers wander up the road from the tube with their shopping bags for life etc.

Or the kids hang around outside the station, waiting for the dealers.

I hate it, tbh, but the police don't seem to care.

(Average commuter town just outside London).

Chap hanging half off a bench at a city centre bus stop this afternoon.
Crowd of similar outside Poundland.
And then by the Escape Room place near Cavell's.
I didn't go as far as B and M but I'm assuming the usual crew were in the corner there.

Skybluepinky · 09/01/2026 19:54

20 years ago I picked up my friends children from school in a well to do area and dealing was going out just outside the school gate and lots of the well to do parents were buying.

Glittertwins · 09/01/2026 20:09

Just this last time, one was injecting in one of the carparks and the second one on Sunday lunchtime was in the process of being thrown out of another carpark as I was heading in
