Joining the RAF - for a neurodiverse teenager

I Am posting in Chat for traffic

my son is nearly 17, doing A levels (chemistry, maths and physics). Did well in GCSEs but struggling with A levels as there is less structure and it’s really not easy for him.

he does CCF at school, has done for years and enjoys it. Has been to various RAF events, camps, competitions etc.

Can anyone share any advice or suggestions or stories or experiences of their neurodivergent teen joining the RAF? I have googled and it’s hard to know if they are enlightened and supportive or whether it would be a huge barrier for him to overcome.

He has ASD (level 1) and ADHD.

thanks

My understanding is that how it impacts the individual is assessed by a medical officer. So lots will get through, but some won't.

We found cadets amazing and they said there was lots of support in the forces too

But I have no experience as the teen i was supporting had semh issues and wouldn't be allowed to join.

In what way is he impacted by his ND?
would he manage in a war zone?

My experience of my own ADHD is that I manage significantly better in emergencies than NT people.

OP I think the only way to find out is to apply and for him to be assessed.

The RAF have a very long list of conditions that they will reject. I think I found it on their webpage. My son has diabetes so obvs no good for flight, etc but was national level in his sport but couldn’t even apply to be a pt instructor. However, things may have changed as that was a while ago but generally I think the armed forces are very wary of ND.
