I have an apartment in France though in the Alps. Just be aware of the maintenance fees for the building.

Sounds lovely
You are very lucky

Will need to consider all the costs and the yearly fees !!!!

Could be way too much

I’m so envious OP. I lived there for two years in my younger days and my dream is to move back.

Fleurdeville · 06/01/2026 14:59

@SparkyBlue if you don’t mind me asking, why did you come back?

I alternate between thinking you should live life now and want to take off for an adventure with being sensible and staying in a secure job and thinking I will have my adventures once I’m retired!

Money, I guess is the deciding factor but if you have energy, drive and and a purpose I think that can get you far and I wonder if I will regret not taking a chance on the unknown even if it leaves me broke

@Fleurdeville I was working in unskilled jobs and living in shitholes but having a great time and came home to study and I thought I’d go back but you know yourself then life happens. Luckily my DH also loves it so maybe one day. My dc are still very young

Fleurdeville · 06/01/2026 15:23

Were you in your 20s? You can only do that for so long, can’t you? It’s a lovely time though.

I love the Montmartre and am rather envious! Good luck!

If you haven’t lived in Paris before maybe spend a few weeks there to get a feel of the different arrondissement as they are very different in feel/character. I used to live in the 15th and really liked it but would be more inclined to live in 12/16/17th if I went back now with a family.

This is very good advice. It really can vary between areas and places that you initially start liking can lose their appeal when you realise that they’re nice to visit but not necessarily what you want for long term living. I’d suggest renting an AirBNB for a few days in areas that you think you like.

I’ve lived in Paris twice, as well as stayed in a lot of different hotels and areas etc when I used to go there with work a lot and some areas can really surprise you. Visiting is very different to living in.

And the managing company and the balance of votes in the block. Friends have been battling a horrendous damp problem for years, but the majority owner will not vote for surveys/ repairs. Nobody else wants to pay for work. Property law is very different in France.

Great point thank you !!!

Yikes

I need way more research
