Son is having a few medical issues there so not required an urgent circumcision, likely in next few weeks.
anyone have experience of this with a similar aged child?
how long were they off school? What could/couldn’t they do for a whole? What sort of aftercare was needed?
I’m sure we will be told all this post surgery but wanting to get prepared and to prepare him.

Happened to me. My Mum made me sit in a bath with detol in it. I remember it was painful. Hapy with myself now though so it was only short term. I don't remember too much else other than there was no respect for me privacy at the time when having examinations.

My son had one at around age 9/10 after lots of urine infections. His foreskin didn’t go back at all. He was off a school for about a week, maybe be 2. The op was painless, they put painkillers up his bottom whilst he was under which lasted the rest of the day. He was then on regular pain relief for a few days. The worst bit was trying to remove the bandage, It got stuck to his penis. In the end he dunked his penis into a cup of warm water to try and ease it off. To this day he won’t eat ‘pigs in blankets’. Best thing we did after years of infections. Lots of sofa time watching TV.

DH had this at a similar age, and he doesn’t remember it being particularly noteworthy so I guess he can’t have found it too bad!

I had it done around the same age and only remember being off school for a day, reading comics and eating ice-cream, but maybe I had the op on Thursday and actually had Friday, Saturday and Sunday off 🤔

Mine was because my foreskin wouldn't go back, but don't remember any infections prior to the op (or afterwards). I vaguely remember having salt water baths for a few days and the bandages being a bit painful to come off, and the stitches, but that was about it.

I have no aversion to "pigs in blankets", but do think foreskins look really weird when I've watched "Naked Attraction".

Are foreskins even supposed to go back at that age?

Bigpinkslippers · 31/12/2025 20:39

My son had this at a similar age, I think he was off school about a week.
The only issue we had was for the first couple of days it was extremely painful to pee, we just sat him in a bath of warm water and he peed in the bath which helped.

Ds had this at 8, about 15 years ago.
Now I think they prefer to try steroid cream as a first step, so if that hasn’t been tried maybe talk to your gp?

Ds had an infection following the op which meant he had over a week off school and couldn’t tolerate any underwear at all, he’d sit with a blanket draped over him.

CurlewKate · 31/12/2025 20:44

has he been offered steroid cream?

I thought it was normal for them not to at this age still. We’ve had the conversation about personal hygiene with my 9 year old and his doesn’t go back yet. Now I’m thinking if I should be worried.

GreenPoms · 31/12/2025 20:55

I’m not sure how much it is supposed to go back, but my DS’s didn’t very much at all. It would balloon when he had a wee. So I think it’s quite obvious when there is a bit of a problem.

Thank u for mentioning it. We are considering it for my DS due to frequent UTIs ☹️

Yes we’ve tried the steroid cream and taken all the steps with the gp and paediatrician before circumcision. Would rather be didn’t have to have this done but unfortunately he does.
thanks for the all the advice!
