I’ve only just remembered this. At primary we played ‘basketball’. 2 kids would stand at either ends of the hall standing on a chair holding a wicker bin to catch the balls in (all wearing pants and vest). In fact I can remember standing on chairs a lot, now banned of course.
I can also remember going to sing at the hospital sitting in the boot of a teachers reliant Robin in secondary.

Keep boys out of the girls’ toilets.

sprigatito · 30/12/2025 23:06

Lifts from male teachers on my own without anyone else knowing where I was

Being sent to do three nights camping as a group of 5 13yo girls, walking about 14 miles a day between camping spots with just a 5 minute check in from a lone teacher once a day

actually a lot of my school memories involve dangerous outdoor education and non-existent safeguarding!

Eating sweets from the tuck shop.
Smoking behind the bike sheds.

Wear what you want. Nowadays schools are all like North Korea on uniform…
also changing in front of the the boys. Or wearing your vest and knickers for pe when you forgot your pe kit 😂

Playing with Mercury. I think a thermometer had broken and the mercury was kept in a yoghurt pot. We were allowed to watch how it moved in the class. At lunchtime we went in the class and helped ourselves to it. Of course we managed to spill it but got most of it out of the heavy grooves in the wooden desk!!!

British Bulldog in the playground. Two people broke their arms!

fashionqueen0123 · 30/12/2025 23:17

Vest and pants was pe kit until about year 3

Blowing into a sheep's lung with a bendy straw in a primary school science lesson to see it inflate 🤢

Perpetuallywondering · 30/12/2025 23:21

If a teacher was off sick or in a meeting we were just left a note on the board that said “Complete p76” or whatever. Left to our own devices! We knew we couldn’t be too loud because next door’s teacher would come in, but otherwise extra break! No one ever seemed to check we did the work.

We had a whole term with the PE teacher off sick and just mucked about with netballs. I concussed myself and still no one seemed to wonder whether or not we should be supervised. We were 11!

Conkers

Lunde · 30/12/2025 23:24

They used to let "Dave the Ice cream man" drive onto school grounds to sell ice cream, sweets and fizzy drinks at lunchtime.

Ah we had them too. Two very dodgy looking guys selling 10p mix up.

The second paragraph was basically the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze award!

Going to the university bar over the road at lunchtime as the teachers went to the pub at the bottom of the road. All pretending we hadn't done the above.

Litter picking. I hated it - we all hated it - but now I pick litter when I’m out in our village walking, I can’t help myself.

Went on holiday and actually got to enjoy family time because it used to be classed as important!

Asbestos mats under our Bunsen burners which I used to pick at when I was bored during a physics lesson!

We were banned from that after A in my year 6 class trod on the same reception kid twice in a week. So we invented another game that definitely wasn't called British Bulldogs but may have looked suspiciously like it to a casual observer. That lasted about a month before the dinner lady cottoned on.

See also Red Rover as the same thing happened. They really should have kept the reception kids out of our way....

In my primary school my friend accused a male TA of molesting her. She was asked to leave the school, he got to stay. This was early 90’s.

He’s been in and out of prison since, all for crimes relating to sexual assaults against children. He was in the local paper just the other day for another historic crime.

Thank god for safeguarding.

Chunkychipsohyeah · 30/12/2025 23:31

My secondary school didn’t have a minibus and on one occasion a few of us got taken to a tennis match by our PE teacher in her car. On the way we stopped at her house, presumably for her to collect something, and we all trooped indoors and met her husband and young DC. This would have been mid 90s.

anyone remember those horrid PE knickers?

murasaki · 30/12/2025 23:31

Traffic surveys for geography. Do they still make kids stand by the side of a road counting cars and lorries and accosting strangers to ask how they came into town today?

biggestcatmom · 30/12/2025 23:31

Getting changed on a bus after swimming lessons or going to a hockey game

Yes, in secondary school. Ours were navy blue.
