Wavy hair during menopause

51 and mid menopause here. Over the last year or so, my hair has suddenly become wavy, verging on curly. Has this happened to anyone else? I’m embracing it and trying different curl products and a diffuser but was just wondering why this has happened. Any ideas?

Hormone changes at a guess.

Same thing can happen during pregnancy too.

Mine is reverting back to the curly-locks I had as a child... except it's grey Grin

No idea why but me too, although mine is a similar texture to wire wool now so no embracing the curl for me! Think I'm just resigned to it looking terrible now, having already tried several fairly extreme solutions including a very ill advised pixie cut I officially give up Blush

Busydoingsomething · 28/12/2025 18:06

Sometimes it looks ok. Other times, it doesn’t! I think that the texture is changing as more of it goes grey too.

Mine did, it seems to have reverted to straight after a few years though.

I won’t give the straighteners away yet then. Weirdly, mine is still straight ish underneath, at the back

My lifelong waves packed up and went. After increasingly desperate attempts to hang on to them I am now rocking the straight hair.

Just another thing I never knew about menopause to add to the list.

TheatricalLife · 28/12/2025 18:18

Yes!!! Mine has totally changed texture and is now wavy. I absolutely hate it and long for my sleek, straight hair back. Now it frequently resembles a lions mane 🙄

Mine did the same OP. After years of trying to get my hair to hold a curl for more than 5 minutes, suddenly it was curly. I've embraced it as well, means I don't need to dry/straighten it, just let it air dry.

I'll swap you @TheatricalLife

Years I spent perfecting my wavy hair technique, years and now my poor diffuser is unwanted, as is my stack of curl products.

Twodogsisbetterthanone · 28/12/2025 18:24

My poker straight hair is now beachy waves. I’ve embraced it and do the curly method on it, scrunch with gel then diffuse etc.

Lilithgolightly · 28/12/2025 18:29

I too went from straight to wavy and just like you OP, I embraced it fully!
I have so many wavy hair enhancing product now, and am loving it!
I have noticed though that the one side is wavier, the back has a real cork-screw curl down the centre which looks a bit odd by itself, but still it beats straight, which I never thought suited me.

Egglio · 28/12/2025 18:31

I have had curly rather than just wavy hair three times in my life - puberty, pregnancy and now menopause! The hormones definitely do something to me.

justrelaxandsleep · 28/12/2025 18:34

Yes this has happened to me and not in a good way!

Busydoingsomething · 28/12/2025 19:45

Seems it’s not unusual then. Another gift from the menopause gods, Beats the mood swings and night sweats I suppose 🙂

Yes and mine has stayed post meno. Like pp I had curly hair as a child then it straightened out during puberty. Interesting it's reversed. Got used to it now.

cramptramp · 28/12/2025 19:55

Same. mine was poker straight then became wavy.

CountryGirlInTheCity · 28/12/2025 23:26

Yes I’ve now got wavy hair. Thankfully it’s still thick and looks nice. Conversely my DSis who has always had deep waves in her hair has now got practically straight hair 🤷‍♀️. It feels like no area of your body goes untouched by the menopause madness!!

gogomomo2 · 28/12/2025 23:27

I was wavy until I had my eldest dd, went almost straight with just curls at the end, then age 47 went curly!

Smallinthesmoke · 28/12/2025 23:29

Yes my hair is now wavy.
Must be the only part of menopause which I actually like- my previously flat hair is miles better, especially with a good conditioning creme each morning.
Another thing no-one prepares you for ...

Jugendstiel · 28/12/2025 23:29

Mine has started doing this. All mylife I've had poker-straight hair and longed for curls and never understood people who hate their curls because they can;t control them. Now my hair has a life of its own and I keep trying to get it to behave, and understand DS's despair at his Robert Plant hair..

NeedForSpeedyGonzales · 28/12/2025 23:56

Me! I spent the last two years wondering what the hell was wrong with my hair. I've now seen a curly hairdresser and had a curly cut.

My bone straight #1 hair is now a #2c and whilst I like the waves, I absolutely loathe the frizz, the feel of all the products and sheet upkeep. I'm considering a chemical relaxant type treatment to go back to being able to just dry it and brush it without looking like a fright.
